This is the one people tend to come up to talk about at the end of our gigs, with some saying it messed with their minds a bit at first :). I can't remember when I first started singing 'Blowin' In The Wind' to the tune of 'Knocking On Heavens Door' but know that right from the very start I realised it needed a chorus so added one. June used to listen to Satnam Kaur's version of ' The Gayatri Mantra' every morning and each time I heard it it reminded me of a slowed down 'Knockin On Heaven's Door' so it was an easy choice when looking for a Mantra to add to our version of 'Blowin' In The Wind.'
Bob Dylan wrote 'Blowin In The Wind' in 1962 and included it on 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' album in 1963.
The 'Gayatri Mantra,' which was written in Sanskrit somewhere between 2500 and 3500 years ago, is recited by both Buddhists and Hindus and believed to bestow wisdom and enlightenment through the vehicle of the sun who represents the source and inspiration of the universe.
I must give a nod in the direction of the 'One Song To The Tune Of Another' segment of the classic BBC radio comedy, panel show, 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' which made it seem quite natural for me to sing one song to the tune of another in the first place. Thanks Humph. (Humphrey Littleton).
