I have a technical question. Trim settings for takeoff. I heard the "1 down" in the takeoff checks, but how to you avoid that "pop" up as the nose comes off, it looks really smooth as they come off. It seems they all have different stab angles in the video right before takeoff, is that because they're holding some forces in? It looks like it's 18, 12, and zero.
@pilotben973 жыл бұрын
Prior to taxiing we have the stick neutralized, and most of us have the artificial spring on (one of the mods we use which changes where you need to hold the stick for level flight), this will make the stab pos 0 (no spring), -1 (spring on with low tension), or -2 (spring on with high tension). Once we stop on the runway those of us using the spring set takeoff trim (+10 or +11 for stab pos). Then as we accelerate down the runway we all pull back to get off the runway at the same time leading to slightly different stab pos numbers. As soon as we get off the ground we are decreasing back pressure to stop the climb, and on Boss’ “a little drive” we raise the flaps which also stops the ballooning. More than anything it takes a LOT of practice to make it look that smooth, and is particularly important that boss is consistent in how he imitates the takeoff.

I was wondering why you were singing the maneuvers but then I remembered the pre flight that this years chief pilot does, that’s just a pre flight tradition, they don’t actually do that during the air show lol, when your doing maneuvers you want them to be precise you don’t want to drag it out and sing it!
@pilotben973 жыл бұрын
I am in the 2 jet here, so I only make a few calls aside from my checkins (“Razor”), but the communications you hear is the cadence the real team uses during all of their airshows, and have done so for decades. The cadence of the words determines the intensity of the action, for example “up we gooo” is very different to “uppp weeee goooooo”, and if the wingmen hear the second we expect a longer and more aggressive pull on the stick.
@melvinelder35873 жыл бұрын
@@pilotben97 hm it makes sense your explanation it just seems a little odd to hear over a sim I guess, every other time I see maneuvers being done like out in the fleet it’s always a precise action, it may just be a blue angle tradition then, the Thunderbirds don’t do it and fleet 18’s don’t do it when doing maneuvers but I’m not that knowledgeable on the blue angles so sorry, the only time I’ve actually heard someone talk in this cadence is in the briefings so
@pilotben973 жыл бұрын
@@melvinelder3587 The Thunderbirds definitely do it as well, the fleet flies much further apart, and rarely fly parade formations, and as such don't need to make the calls for precise movements.

Could you ask the boss this question? “Is it hard to get down to the specific altitude with perfect runway heading, just in front of the CP when doing the Diamond 360"
@pilotben973 жыл бұрын
Hey, I lead a different team doing the same demo so I can answer that question for you directly: Unequivocally; yes. Honestly lineups in general are one of the hardest things to get right when you are learning to lead a demo like this, the maneuvers you get used to somewhat quickly if you have a leading mindset, but lineups are very very sensitive to mistakes. If you forget to/can’t turn until you are 2 seconds past where you need to you could miss a line by anywhere from 500-2k feet depending on all your other parameters and how quickly you notice your error. The Diamond 360 and Fan Break are 2 of the most difficult ones to get right because boss cannot make any adjustments once he says the maneuver is ‘set’, so typically you are committed to a line (good or bad) when you’re more than 90 degrees from show center while descending. These maneuvers are also seriously sensitive to entry speed, if you’re even 20 knots slow or fast your bank angle and G needs to correct for it. Hope that answers your question.
@carrierlandinghdlegacyhorn26863 жыл бұрын
@@pilotben97 Thank you for answering. If you remember me, I’m the guy who asked a lot of questions related to Blue Angles on Instagram, my account name was something like FELLY Hayabusa with a blue icon. Thank you for those questions back then. I totally agree what you said. The FanBreak and Diamond360, (these are completely the same for the lead, right?) are the most sensitive maneuvers I feel. I fly in another sim, and this is the video of me doing Fan Break kzbin.info/www/bejne/boasZ2Vug7uFr6M I finally got it by breaking it down into 3 parts. The parts are decided by the heading, the first part, second part, then the final part. The bank angle is the same in all the parts, but the Gs are different just like you guys VBA. I think the initial speed is different from VBA because of the different drag index between our sims. I pull 1.7G in the first part, then add pull to 2.1G in the second part, then 2.2G in the final part. This is my technique. In this way, I get it the sam way every time I try it. Of course, setting up for the maneuver is very important too. However the biggest problem is the wind, I practice this with 0 wind. So I have no idea how the winds affect this sensitive maneuver. Do you use the ground speed for this maneuver, or just the IAS on your HUDD? For the set up(for me, it is 345kt, yes, very fast), I need to decide which one I use. Thanks.

I haven’t found an answer in comments below, so here I go; do you guys have wake turbulance option set to on? Is it even possible in DCS to fly for instance Diamond 360 with wake turbulance on? Cheers!
@pilotben972 жыл бұрын
We do not, I cannot remember if this flight was before or after wake turbulence was released, but the way ED has implemented wake turbulence is unrealistic when you are close to other aircraft - it is passable/good at a distance, but when you are close it behaves very oddly. For example I fly 4 now, and if I fly above and behind Boss’ jet for the Double Farvel I will be physically unable to maintain position because for some reason the wake off his jet rises up instead of down like it should. Additionally as you mentioned the 360 was an interesting one with wt on, last time we tested it you got sucked into boss’ wing on both wings instead of pushed gently away (this push is not actually caused by wt irl, rather the air compressing between the wing and canopy, but it definitely shouldn’t suck you in). Finally (not really, but for this comment at least so it’s not too long), with the correct in-trail spacing on final approach again the wake does not dissipate or descend enough and appears to actually ‘climb’ as even with the appropriate slight offset vertically 2-6 get hammered with wake trying to land, to the point of being unsafe. Unfortunately like most things ED does not test this stuff for accuracy in the formation environment much less close formation, like I said it’s kind of ok at a distance and was neat for rejoins as it appeared to work correctly based on some videos of the real team rejoining through each others wake, but once you get close it just kind of falls apart from a realism perspective. Thanks for the question.
