When I was 13 years old in 1980 my Mother took me to see an air show at Cherry Point, NC... It included the Blue Angels. I recall buying a program with all the pilots pictures...To a wide-eyed kid it was over the top fantastic. I had never experienced anything quite like that. I distinctly remember Jim Ross being part of the team at that time... At some later point I decided that aviation might be for me, but how?...It took a while to get up the courage and the money but finally at the age of 27 I quit my day job and went to a commercial flight school... Fast forward to 2007 where I was now a first officer on an A300 at FedEx and I was assigned a trip to South America with a Captain Jim Ross...”Jungle” I think was his call sign... What a surreal experience to see a Blue Angel fly as a kid, and then actually fly with him later as an adult...What I distinctly remember was him saying when it was my turn to fly was: “This is your leg, your jet, do what you want, keep us safe.” Over a quarter of a century after seeing Jim perform with the Blue Angels having him tell me that it was “my jet, just keep us safe” left an indelible mark on me...Great guy.. Perfecto!

I was 10 when Jim gave me a tour of Miramar in ‘77. Absolutely fell in love with the Tomcat. He mentored me and was a huge part of me getting a slot in AOCS in Pensacola. He always had time for me or anyone. A true gentleman. Jungle is one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege to know! So happy this video was made.

In 1982 my dad and I were fishing on the beach at Ft. Morgan, AL when all of a sudden there was this booming roar. Both of us hit the sand. People all around us were ducking. I looked up and it was a Blue Angel A4, flying super low and up side down. Scared the crap out of us and thrilled us all at the same time.

I just emailed him today and he replied; it was great to hear from him. Funny, how time flies by. I retired as Master Chief in August of 1995 after have served 28 years. Amazing I managed to stay out of trouble all of those years. Take care, Steve.

I met Jim at an airshow in Michigan in the summer of 1980. I was civilian flight instructing and flying charter at the time. I was accepted into Navy flight training and was headed to Pensacola in Oct. 1980. I went on to fly the F14 but never made it to the Blues. Jim was awesome to talk to and very gracious. We also had a fraternity bond as he was a Sigma Chi in college as was I. So In Hoc brother Jim and God Bless.

It is so pleasing to see so many comments of Jim Ross that are right on the money. He is the real deal & this interview is as authentic as Jim is. Our Family Reunion in 2013 was in Roundup, Montana during the 4th of July celebration. Roundup has a parade during this celebration every year. Jim was handing out small flags to young and old sharing his love of Country. A real patriot & true giver! I'm just one of the many kin that are so very proud of Jim. We love Jim! Thank you Ryan for the great interviews & sharing the love of your brothers. I bet the majority of men & women on this channel are cut from the same cloth!

Jungle was a good friend to me. 25 years ago he and Olga opened their home to my 3 year-old son and me while I attended upgrade training at my company. About 15 years ago, I interviewed Jungle for my podcast. That show ended, but I rebooted it last year with a co-host. As a tribute to Jungle, and with Olga's permission last week, I will re-broadcast that interview on 'So There I Was' in a couple weeks. Rest in peace, Jungle. And Thank you for your friendship!

I met Bruce Davey around '86 or '87 while I was working line service for Clay Lacy at Van Nuys airport. Bruce was flying part time briefly (part 91) on a Lear and Jet star which we managed. The hallways and offices were adorned with air-to-air photos of the Blue Angels taken from Clay's Learjet. Those team photos over historical landmarks like Mt. Rushmore, Statue of liberty, Golden Gate bridge etc.

Mr Ross mentions Jack Ekl. I met Mr Ekl at an air show at NAS Whidbey. From what I remember, he was walking around in the crowd before the show. My dad flew in EA-6Bs and asked Mr Ekl for a photo with my brother and I. Mr Ekl also signed my program. Unfortunately cologne spilled on my paper program and the autograph was erased. My dad’s camera malfunctioned so the photo didn’t come out. That was probably 40 years ago and I still remember it, it made such an impression on me. My family and I still watch the Blues but now it’s on Lake Washington. Feel free to watch some of my videos and say hi.

Loved the Blue Angels flying the A-4! Began seeing them in 1976 (I was 13) at the Pt. Mugu show with entire family. Would always try to get their autographs but so many fans prevented me from getting all pilots. Mike Curtin's was the last autograph I ever got, also at Pt. Mugu, because he was killed the next day or following weekend at Miramar and I had such a sick feeling because his was the only autograph I was able to get at that Mugu show and I was actually able to have a brief conversation with him about me joining the Marine Corps. I was so inspired after our talk. I was devastated when I saw the breaking story on the evening news. His death hit me very hard and I never asked for another autograph after that. I continued to attend airshows featuring the Blue Angels all throughout the 80s and 90s, including El Toro, Pt. Mugu and Reno Air Races.

Blue Angel Phantoms . If it is anything like the mid 70s, you will certainly enjoy Seattle. I went there a couple of times as a Crew Chief with the Blues for the Budweiser boat races. The last time there, we toured the 747 that was being build at the Boeing plant. We ate at many great restaurants and the people were so nice. I even met Henry Wrinkler, from Happy Days who was staying at the same hotel we stayed at. Henry was a cool person to talk to and he just loved the Blue Angels.
