I loved the Blue Beetle story in Young Justice, and the story arc with the Reach was gripping because it felt like a lose lose situation. No matter what the good guys did, they were out maneuvered. A great direction to take this movie in would have been a Tobey Maguire Spiderman 2, where Jaime cannot stand being permanently linked to the Beetle, where the voice in his head is incessantly nagging at him for dominance, torturing him psychologically. In the end, his empathy, moral compass and compassion win, but not without him making some weighty mistakes along the way. I think the Scarab/Jaime dynamic would've been more interesting if they'd taken cues from season 2 of the Young Justice cartoon. That Scarab was a paranoid sadist, often suggesting they kill someone on the YJ team in some creative fashion for little more than amusement. If not for fun, then to keep them from trying to hurt the Scarab (even when that clearly wasn't a concern). It was fun, in stark contrast to this version of the Scarab which was painfully boring by comparison.

And that 'flight failing while practically in orbit' part is almost directly 1:1 Not considering the comics, just the films, its like they went "let's do Iron Man, but with bugs."

@@markmunroe-hz8rf Maybe that's why the comic book industry is about to bankrupt a second time, meanwhile the manga (and the koreans are also taking a piece of the pie) is thriving, Marvel and DC don't allow new authors and stories to thrive and when they actually give a chance, usually these stories are published by niched publishers such as Vertigo, Image is also one who tries new stuff, etc.. in the end, there's no more stories to tell with these characters, most of them are recycling plots since the 60s at least. This concept of recycling works with kid friendly series, because their target audience naturally "rotates" every decade or so. And even if Marvel and DC are also childish in nature, many people still couldn't let go and the writers are trying to keep up with times, but they are not talented enough to come up with new and interesting stories. The "cinematic universe" gave a literal second life for the comics industry, but now in the digital era with piracy running amok and lack of engagement from the public, they are about to bankrupt yet again

It really is a shame. As a Blue Beetle comics and old Young Justice fan, the appeal of Jaime's character IS that his home life is pretty crap and he's surrounded by horribleness, but he never compromises his convictions, no matter what he's faced with. Even the scarab in his own BRAIN wants nothing more than to destroy everything, and caving would make his whole life SO much easier, but he never does, no matter how tired, worn out, or beaten down he becomes. And that steadfast no-compromising nature is what causes change in the scarab, which is VERY much an intelligent weapon bent on mass destruction. And it's that good nature when it's NOT convenient for him and when he's at his wit's end that makes Jaime such a great character. But, while the movie was fine, it felt too distracted by its politics to really do JAIME as a character justice, which kept it from being amazing and memorable...
@P.Whitestrake Жыл бұрын
I think they didn't go that route because it would've been too similar to Spider-Man. Well, Jaime's BB is basically DC's Spider-Man.
@nekovanguard9553 Жыл бұрын
I feel like "the movie was fine" is also a problem. How can you build a successful interconnected universe based on bunch of movies thats just "fine"? In the infinity saga, every new character that had their standalone movie offers something new that other movies either hasn't do or did it but not as focused, plus all character do contribute towards a specific finale. DCEU felt and is a mess because they have no endgame ever since snyder was out, they basically just put as many mediocre movie they could and hope few of them ends up grossing as much as Joker or Aquaman to make up for the rest of the failed ones, and at the same time use those movie as a means to spread their agendas (same thing can be said with post endgame MCU).

Dang I wish all that came across in the film. That sounds great. I know nothing about the comics but I thought it would have been better if the Scarab had more of a personality in the movie. Maybe it's been done, but the robotic nature didn't lend itself to this idea of conflicting desires which you mention. It made the interactions with Jaime kind of boring.
@Horvath_Gabor Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Jaime's initial run of the rebooted Blue Beetle was one of the best DC comics had to offer in that era, and it was a justifiably beloved series. Sure, he's not an A-lister, like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman, but if the first phase of the MCU had taught us anything, it was that with good writing, you can turn even C-listers like the Guardians of the Galaxy into beloved household names, and make generally popular but not very highly regarded characters like Tony Stark and Thor into beloved fan favorites. Yet, after failing to establish their own tone and brand due to the horrendous writing of the Snyderverse, DC decided to jump over the good stuff, and try to imitate Phase 4 of Marvel instead. It boggles the mind how studios with decades of filmmaking experience and handling hundreds of millions of dollars can be this detached from reality and incompetent.

A young man who's dealing with financial troubles, family issues and fighting crime has to balance all of these and grow as a person while doing so. He's teamed up with so many classic heroes and even became part of the Tean Titans. He might not have a long history, but there are a lot of angles this movie could have gone for with his story other than "Generic hero # whatever" I would have been legitimately interesting if they added Booster Gold into the story and had him be a mentor throughout to Jaimie, all thr while Booster would still be grieving the loss of his best friend, Ted Kord, the OG Blue Beetle (I know he's the second one be you know what I mean). Idk. I'm not going to watch it, mostly because of its missed potential.

When Marvel launched the MCU they didn't use some kid starting out his Hollywood career, they used the veteran RDJ, a face people knew with the acting talent to capture Stark's charm and ego. This was before the death of the movie star so whilst he may not have been the biggest name, he was still well known enough to put bums on seats. The nearest DC had was Henry Cavill, who has name recognition, but they decided to recast to another unknown actor that will fail to grab audiences and draw them in. The DCU is DOA. I liked Jaime in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which was my introduction to Blue Beetle. It didn't disrespect the legacy of the earlier versions of the Beetle, but went out of its way to showcase who those were and how they differed too.

I learned about Blue Beetle from the Young Justice cartoon about a decade ago and really enjoyed the character. But they needed to make a movie about him around that time. For that matter they should of made a Teen Titan Movie, but with what we have seen lately, we should be thankful we got table scraps, or chewing gum, just munching without being fulfilled.
@leojamesquiambao1047 Жыл бұрын
First time I heard of Blue Beetle was in Batman: The Brave and the Bold. One of the episodes he was featured in, Fall of the Blue Beetle, was still one of my faves in that series. Especially in the last part, where Batman tells Jaime ": I wasn't sure you were ready to know about this. Our work is dangerous and not all hero stories have happy endings."
@BiggieTrismegistus Жыл бұрын
I haven't seen the episode but it sounds like their relationship was carried over from the comics. Batman really likes Jaime and acts as a mentor to him on occasion. Sometimes it's tough love but what else would you expect from Batman?

Yes, Batman the Brave and the Bold, both the comic book series done many years ago and the more recent cartoon, handles obscure heroes and villains much better than the DCEU movies do. The version of Blue Beetle in those shows is superior to this movie.
@BiggieTrismegistus Жыл бұрын
@@enfieldjohn101 It annoys me that the DC's animated shows and movies are so good but the live action pales in comparison. One of the things I've noticed is that the animated movies are based directly on popular stories from the comics but the live action films try to do their own thing. That makes no sense to me. The MCU has started to doing that too and that's coincided with declining box offices and review scores. Having a good stort is ovbviously pretty damn important as far as making filmmaking goes. Basing movies on well-loked or loved comic book stories means you already have a story you know people will like.
@enfieldjohn101 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! This is one of the biggest problems I have with live action superhero movies. They take the comic books, look them over and go "Okay, here are the character names, place names, what powers and abilities everybody has. Got that wrote down. Dramatize the stories the creators told? Naw, let's do our own thing now." Then they toss the comics over their shoulders and write up utter nonsense that has little or nothing to do with the stories that fans of the characters love. Sometimes, they even change the appearances of the characters and their powers because artistic license and its whatever year it is when they start the project so we can't do things the old way even though the old way is what fans love. It really doesn't make any sense at all. They either don't notice, or don't care that the truly popular, well-loved animated movies and shows of these characters are so often animated versions of the stories we've read in the comics when they make live action movies. @@BiggieTrismegistus

I think the fact that they don’t attempt to shoehorn legacy characters into the plot is one of this movie’s greatest strengths. It stands on its own. My biggest complaint about Disney-helmed franchises like Star Wars and the MCU in the last several years is that none of the shows and movies are really allowed to stand on their own merits (because they have none) and most of these offerings feel like nothing more than just advertisements for other products. Boba Fett was basically a commercial for Mandalorian S3 and Ahsoka. Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Fuckery was just a keystone to pull all kinds of other franchises together too. I think the fact that DC made Blue Beetle simply to serve its own plot and characters is an incredibly refreshing move on their part. It was great to see Blue Beetle just be Blue Beetle and not attempt to be a brand ambassador for DC. The movie has its shortcomings for sure. But it was nice to just take my kids to a superhero movie without the responsibility of having to familiarize ourselves with the entire DC catalog first.

My biggest issue being with it the villains, mostly because I found signs of something great. You could notice how they tried to portray Victoria Kord manipulating Carapax, and it reminded me of The Manchurian Candidate, where Raymond is actually controlled by his mother. I wish they had explored it a bit deeper, or at least shown Carapax being conflicted by his relationship with Kord throughout the movie, so it would better justify why he's constantly telling Jaime that his love for his family is a weakness

That infamous "Batman is a fascist!" line follows some dialog where George Lopez is gushing about Ted Kord being Blue Beetle and how much people loved the Blue Beetle. Then Jaime said something along the lines of Blue Beetle seeming like a low rent "Batman", and George Lopez quips back with, "Batman's a fascist!" It's a shame the trailer didn't include more of that scene. I know in the comics that it's Kord's uncle that's evil, but the DCEU kind of screwed a lot of the elements in Ted Kord's history. Have Jaime be an outsider, but likeable and with an obvious pension for kindness and humor, making people like him despite not being a College Graduate. Some people seem to be operating under the assumption that "If you felt some type of way about it, that was the point" as implying they were facists themselves for disagreeing, but if you read the director says, and have the context of the character who says it; Director: "We always wanted to have fun with the way Rudy talks about other superheroes," Soto said. "So to the people who got mad at it, give us a chance. We’re just trying to have fun with the characters that we love. And everybody in our movie loves Batman and Superman and Flash." He added, "And of course, we have criticisms about all of them, as we all should. But that doesn’t mean that we hate Batman." context: The character that says it is a paranoid conspiracy theorist who isn’t fond of superheroes. It becomes clear that they're trying to paint a dichotomy wherein not everyone views superheroes, or at least ALL superheroes as actual heroes. A distinction between a genuinely altruistic hero and a vigilante who's primary motivation is a revenge boner. Depending on how you look at things, what experiences comprise your worldview, you might think of Batman as one, or the other.* You could certainly still make a case that this is wokeism, but I think it's a stretch to say that Xolo was disrespectful, unless there's some other context I'm missing. *note: this dichotomy is present in Batman V Superman. They just didn't use the buzzword "fascist", so no one gave it a second thought. Actually, they were a lot more subtle with it in general, but just in seeing how the two operate, you can see it. And you can also see the motivation for it. Superman is a god. He doesn't have to feel fear for his own sake. Certainly not in the same way a mere human like Batman would. On one hand Batman is afraid superman is a threat to humanity, on the other superman is afraid batman is a threat to himself and others. The vigilante and the altruist. The vulnerable, and the invulnerable.

Here's the really sad thing about this movie: If the studio had advertised it as "a fun awakening of a young superhero, facing down a big evil corporation with powers he barely understands" - and that alone - it might have been perceived as generic but it would've had a chance. Punching things and feeling good are pretty easy to sell. The problem is that the actors, director, and producer would simply not shut up about how "meaningful" it was. Not fun, not entertaining, not enjoyable, not exciting… How it was incredibly meaningful and iconic for Mexican people everywhere. Why? Do Mexican people not like to have fun? Does it help you out to imply that the movie isn't for the rest of us, who like to have fun? I can accept a generic, by the numbers action film. Sometimes that's exactly what I want. Sell me that. But this abomination of marketing? Why would I want it? And I say that as someone who likes Blue Beetle in the comics, from Ted Kord on. There is a really pleasant dynamic to mine there. Even if much of the set up and payoff is "borrowed" from The Guyver. Without the interesting deep history. This didn't have to be the kind of failure it is. They decided it needed to be.

If you don't like the marketing, but the film is good, then maybe try not to follow the marketing so closely? It's quite easy to avoid interviews and articles about a single film. Also I think you're actually wrong about selling punching+feelgood - we've had like 90 different films and series about the same shit for decades now. Superhero fatigue is a real thing, and studios know they need an angle if they're gonna sell more of these lifeless cash-grabs.

@@samlawrence2239 Thanks for telling me "don't do that." Are you telling me that I shouldn't care about such things? Are you suggesting that you know better than I what I should be doing with my time? Answer carefully. At this point, actually selling "we punch things and we feel good" WOULD be the new angle. He's not gender flipped, he's not angsty, he's not exiled, he's not traveling through time - not having a ridiculous gimmick very well could have been his ridiculous gimmick for the sale. Which is what I said in the first place. I'm not even saying that the film is good. It's tolerable. As others have said, it could have been good if they had leaned more into the "scarab as paranoid sadist intrusive thoughts"-line, actually producing some kind of conflict at that level but… They didn't. Their marketing team is not above criticism. No one is. And no one should be.

As a Mexican American, I'll say what no one else wants to admit. This movie definitely leaned into the race/culture aspect of it, which of course turns potential viewers away. They were probably hoping to create the same racial buzz black panther got but that movie came out when super hero fatigue wasn't a thing, and was admittedly a better movie. Me personally, it has the quality of a highly budgeted Disney channel movie so I wasn't a fan. A far cry from man of steel for example, and yes of course, I did feel pandered to. Me having a racial connection to this movie doesn't simply make it better by default. I won't call it woke, but it was definitely hoping for things other than it's story telling to carry it.

The Guyver came immediately to mind as you were describing the premise and origin story.

Every movie hollywood announces, I will immediately think it’s the worst, most garbage movie of all time and it’ll be woke to the max. Are my expectations unjustified?

Not necessarily. You're just jaded from the status quo from the track record of the last 5-6 years of film. Not entirely unjustified for thinking so.

It's not. Very few studios, let alone movies, are "fun" nowadays since what Hollywood, the Liberal left, the Demoncrats and those who defend them view as "fun" is looking down on the everyday man and shouting to the top of their lungs how "toxic" we are.

I say 50/50. Sure there's been pretty bad to okay movies but I think there's a decent chunk that pretty enjoyable. I'm not really obsessed with the whole woke thing, the only thing I really from it is the raceswaping and Mary Sue stuff.

I think I fall in that camp as well sometimes. I entered this movie with the most cynical of expectations. I ended up lightly surprised that it wasn’t completely terrible.
