Yeah, part of it makes me bummed out too. I came up in the late 80's and early 90's. I am not quite old school, but almost. I do see that microphones offer a new realm of possibilities, where the rest of the ensemble does not have to get as quiet for a soloist, or the soloist can be further back on the field. To each their own I guess. These are the rules now, not doing it is a sure way to lose big.

Notice how there are only small tweaks to Blue Devil's show throughout the season. All the videos are the same from June through August. The set pieces are solid from the beginning of the season to the end. The set pieces are rooted in the thematic argument of the show. In Cadets Awakening in 2016, for example, the changes were so massive, every week, that it convinced the judges the show had no real raison d'etre. No backbone. No cornerstone. No solid meaning. No foundation. This is a real testament to BD's design prowess.

I was totally blown away by this show in Dallas on 7/24. If you're judging this show off this video and haven't seen it in person, then you can't have a true perspective on how good this show really is. Not to mention, the horrid sound of an indoor stadium as compared to an outdoor venue. Do yourself a favor and try to see this show outdoors.

(Recent) BD shows are only good on the 50 yd line- their sound design does not scale to boomy stadiums at all. (Recent) SCV and Bluecoats on the other hand are great from any angle. Not to say that BD performers aren't awesome, their staff just doesn't design the acoustics as well as other corps.

All the stuff leading up to it is phenomenal, but that last hit is kind of a let down. I am almost sure they will change it and make it even better for finals.

It's a fine program performed by fine musicians. The only real crime here is there is not enough moving and playing. I almost want to have a stopwatch to rack up total minutes whilst playing and standing still (meaning, not marching). Just thumbing through I find it hard to even find a single instance where they march and play as an ensemble! Insane!

DeltaBugles saw it at the theater last night and I agree. Steve Rondinaro remarked that it didn't matter that they moved as much because they play so well... I had to sideeye that comment, then what is the point? I've spent the last 18 years or so in the classical world with Orchestra (my daughter is a serious violinist ) obviously the more you move and play the more risk on the sound, so not moving as much is less risk. This is a game of comparison, if it is between SCV and Blue Devils (.3 separating the two ) I'd give it to SCV for the high demand and the execution. Obviously I'm not a judge and it's just personal preference for me. I was really surprised at how much standing they did. My favorite BD shows were Tommy and The Godfather so I'm admittedly not a huge BD fan. I guess I could get on board if they moved and played far more..

Yeah that comment by Steve doesn't really make sense IMO. Crown moved much more and sounded better, so.... lol :) It doesn't seem like they take degree of difficulty into account all that much, and that doesn't seem fair to me. I love the gymnastics scoring system, with its starting values. I'm a scouts fan, but I loved BD in 2007 and 2010. Lots of clean movement while playing (sometimes in a full sprint while playing), awesome design, good playing. I too would've given SCV the edge this year. I think Cavaliers are on their way back up, so it should be interesting in the next couple of years.

ItzSilentStorm its about the history of DCI, in the start, they had not very big hits and little choreography. And as the years went on, they went form more professional to show style. The music and style changed over the years and with the use of electronics they can add much more. Im terrible at explaining stuff

Metamorph gives us a Blue Devil's retrospective from the past 60 years, on their diamond anniversary. They start off with the traditional 1960's off the line from the zero yard line, with an announcement from their very first field show. We hear strains of music from their 60 years of past shows. They morph from pupa 1:19 , as shown in the white body sox they dance in at first, to butterflies with wings by the end of the show. (Note the flag design is that of butterfly wings.) They play Flight of the Bumblebee as an homage to taking flight, like a butterfly. They continue to morph and innovate, featuring the longest and most difficult trombone solo in the history of DCI. They end with "Diamonds in the Sky", an homage to their diamond anniversary, where the stairs create diamond tops, and bridges to the future.

Given that bumblebee is just simple chromatic movement, I don't even think that's all that hard. I was playing that chart at the end of my high school days....b/c chromatic movement is a fundamental that brass players should be able to do w/o really thinking about it. Getting it together as the ensemble is impressive, but I've heard other corps do much more difficult material cleanly, as an ensemble. So I feel that their degree of difficulty is low, in the music. I wish DCI was scored like gymnastics. Simone Biles destroyed the rest of the field b/c she did difficult material, at a very high level.

BD does this like every other year. They have a show that the judges love due to the high challenge and execution, while the fans don't understand the concept or really enjoy the show. Especially with shows like SCV, Cavi's, Bluecoats, Carolina Crown, it would be depressing for me if they took the title this year.

Nice point, I agree with you on all but I'd like to add that in a lot of forms [most] of entertainment, having your fans not understand what you are doing isn't a great move. Further, there are a lot of qualified musicians, in some cases much more qualified than a DCI judge, that would think this isn't entertaining - and certainly understand music concepts and music execution. So we end up with the following: a few judges with uber music-ability, and a few of the staff of the drum corps in question, only they understand what is happening?? Because it is so cutting edge?? Nah... at any rate I think [like in the other forms of entertainment] you can have something challenging, with execution, and still have expression that moves people. Just my .02!!! I'll be at finals hoping for SCV!! Cheers!!

Those who are dislike should be they who have died of some band fanatic BUT do know nothing. But #Peace bro/sist! With or without those trophy WE WHO LISTEN TO THE MUSIC and WE WHO SAW THE SHOW are knew that #bluedevils are way too up above the rest, this is include their 2016 performance. By this year, the #bluedevils teaching us how we supposed to do in using a backdrop/property on our display, not sitting just there as your stage, caused the field is becoming there as your Stage. This has improved somewhat since I saw it about a month ago. They still need to work on that drill move starting at 4:29. It is a mess-those lines are not straight and meshing well at all. I really wish they would push themselves outside of their comfort zone. Seems like the same stuff year after year.

Saw the show early the season, to be honest, I can't see that much improvement, some of the weaker areas of the show still need work, the snare feature wasn't as tight as I heard it before, seems a little rusty at this performance. The transition into the ballad, the low brass response during "flight of the bumble bee", the transition into the trumpet feature, and as much as I have always been fascinated by the BD's Guard, they didn't seem to have the impact they usually do in the visual performance. I'm looking forward to seeing this show live again at finals, I really enjoyed it and was entertained by their performance over all, but I've seen BD cleaner in the past by this time in the season.

I love BD and I don't want to seem like a hater but this show is very hard to grasp for me. It has really nice qualities but this is by far a downgrade from last season (just my personal opinion). I'm thinking maybe it's better in person because they have scored really well the past week.

What's not to grasp. It's the history of the Blue Devils on their 60th, a diamond anniversary. Diamonds in the sky, morphing from larva to butterflies, taking flight, flight of the bumblebee, and a bit of humor too-- as soon as the front person makes a correction, everyone behind him follows in chain reaction, dressing right, and realigning the drill set, just like the old days. Also, off the line, you can see some members missed the step off and run to catch up, just lke the old days. Freakin hilarious.

These guys are clean but i dont enjoy the musicality of it. Like the music choice - Flight of the Bumblebee doesnt appeal to me. I understand that its amazing that they are able to play FotB so cleanly, but its not 'Groovy'. Bluecoats this year has a nice chill vibe while BD this year feels frantic. Just my opinion
