what would you suggest using to blow a hole through 40 feet of solid concrete? Should we call the military and have them hit it with a GBU-57 MOP? You do understand that blowing the dam would cause ACRES of sediment and toxins to erode from the riverbed upstream, doing drastically more damage to the environment, right? You do understand that blasting a dam the right way takes MONTHS of planning and execution to do safely and effectively, right? and thats not including any upgrades downstream for future flood control, which is one of the things that dams are used for. you do understand that theres a bridge right there, which would need engineering studies done to make sure that the new lower water level wouldn't erode the pilings in a way that would cause more damage. or cause subsidence / slipping of the soil that would cause damage. Simply put: The experts will take care of it, and they arent asking the internet for help.

Because the debris wasn't there until the middle of Sunday night. When they called their contractor to remove it, they didn't want to put their people on top of the dam in those conditions, which was obviously the correct decision considering it was overtopped Monday morning and then the embankment collapsed. Stop pretending to be an expert in things you know nothing about and instead spend a few minutes learning the answers on your own. It's all out there and easy to find.
@erniecolussy1705
@erniecolussy1705 24 күн бұрын
That debris was mostly caught on the SR-9 bridge until about 10:30 PM Sunday night. At that time it broke free and floated to the dam. We can see this by looking at a graph of the data from the river gage down steam of the dam. At about 10:30 PM the flow at that river gage almost immediately drops a few thousand cfs due to the debris hitting the gates of the dam. The water was likely flowing around the left end in two hours or so after the debris hit the dam. There was no way to access the debris when it was stuck on the bridge. There is no way that they could of removed it quick enough once it floated towards the dam.

In the grand scheme of things, a few very old structures is not a huge loss for the state or county. But, for the family and the community it has to be devistating. Too bad they could have not just blown a hole in the dam and the let nature take it down the rest of the way. This of course is unrealistic, removal of a dam takes lots of time, environmental assessments and care. Wish all the best for the Dam Store family and hoping the store can be saved.

@@plmn93 What do you think they'll do long term for that bank? Just curious your thoughts, you seem to be one of the sane ones commenting a lot. 😉 I can't see them leaving that cliff there after they take out the dam. I'm thinking they buy the people's properties as flood plain easement. They'll dredge out all the silt clogging the channel below the dam and assuming it tests clean for containments, will reuse it for fill to help re-slope the bank. If they got extra cash they might put the park back in, but at least a spiffy sign about the dam and flood. If the cafe doesn't fall in, it'll either be demoed or moved (if they can stabilize the bank enough for the equipment). Edit: The county assessment done two-ish years ago said that if the dam were removed the bridge would have to be replaced too.

Why haven't they blown part of the dam to relieve the pressure and mitigate the erosion around the dam? Dam is serving a negative effect now as it isn't impeding flow but promoting other environmental issues. Creating a breach in the dam mid stream would prevent further endcutting around the dam like we are seeing. I'm no engineer but at this point it seems like a better option then to let the river continue to cut it's own path.

No, the 2019 flooding brought debris of which the engineers at that time could not remove from two of the gates, leaving in that process at that time too much damage to those two gates' ability to reopen. Since then, the remaining five gates have been left open to just allow the flow unhindered passage - -sediment and all, while in the meantime since, official surveys, assessments and funding were being implemented to get this dam either maintained or removed. ....sadly, too little too late for several reasons both within as well as beyond their control.

@@Krzwl Considering the costs, I would say it was beyond their control. In the end, taxpayers have to agree to pay. And even if the work would have started it wouldn't have been done by now. I think the consensus with public officials was removal but the cost was astronomical. While the general public was in favor of upgrades which would have kicked the can down the road.

@@plmn93 👍 Indeed to all points there, thank you. At least there was funding granted for serious due assessments and closer attentions to date. 2019 flood brought severe damages to the dam, and to add to the complexity of this decsion-making process, I can only personally speculate the timing of the pandemic interim (by the way) adding further 'hairiness' to this whole process. FERC and ACE are now getting very closely involved with this incident during and after (esp. as the water level and flow rate greatly decline in the last 24 hrs), and this is a good thing moving this process forward. My best regards and prayers for all these agencies' workers and the native citizens involved in the area.

He said he was going to get us healthcare, then he went golfing. His tariffs jacked up prices and you blame Joe. Joe passed a Trillion Dollar Infrastructure Bill your reps voted against but are taking credit for. They'll get this fixed, Pete is the best. Well as it goes politics hinders any solution. They are as helpless as joe. Taking out the center of the dam would take the pressure off the erosion for starters. Bet the land and house that was lost the the owner still has to pay the bank and taxes. Plus pay the fees for the debris removal down stream. They will think about it as soon as the bridge collapses.

The dam was designed for this. The water went to the spillway located where the "illegal" constructions were located AKA: gift shop and house. Take a look at the blueprints from this dam. Someone constructed a road, and then those homes on the spillway later on.

All they had to do was blow the dam to save the house, cliff property, bridge, etc. The dam looks very old anyway and it's already failed. Have the USAF send a couple F35s with some missiles to blow the dam and when the waters subside, rebuild the dam. Why allow the people to lose their home AND land?! Also, the expensive bridge. If they cared, they would have just blown the dam.
