@@winterspirit3734I wouldn’t say she was “happy” during her time with Master Eiji either. While she was glad to have a mentor who cared for her, her childhood/adolescence was still filled with vengeance. The entire time she lived with him, she learned swordmaking and swordfighting for the sole purpose of enacting her revenge. Revenge, because whoever her white father is, he is responsible for r@ping her mother, he is responsible for tainting her “pure” Japanese blood, he is responsible for the fire that killed her mother, he is responsible for her bullying and her inability to fit in and have a place in society. While not in active danger or distress during her time with Master Eiji, that’s still not a child that I’d consider to be happy.

We saw child!Mizu standing in front of her supposed-mother's grave so she couldn't have been with the same woman as an adult. Plus, the ep was told in a parallel manner to the play. For me, it was meant to show how Mizu will never be truly happy because of her revenge. Her revenge follows her, swallows her whole. She can choose to settle down, but deep down she knows that's impossible because at the end of the day, her revenge is what keeps her moving. She is and will always be the ronin.

God this scene wrecks me. It's the first time she's trusting and showing someone else who she truly is, and he completely rejects her and calls her a monster. It also makes the later scene with Taigen so much more impactful - when they're playfully sparring/wrestling at the Swordmaster's house, and Taigen VERY obviously being attracted to Mizu in that moment - without even being aware she's not a man. She's not yet showing him completely who she is, but he's at least seemingly ready to accept that part of her that her once "husband" so brutally rejected.

@masterfreeman11710 ай бұрын
There is however a big difference between her sparring with her husband and playfighting with Taigen. Her husband never consented to sparring with their weapons unsheathed and the risk that entails. She unsheathed her weapon first and in the end held a sharp blade to his throat. This whole interaction seemed to excite her and she kissed him, but to him the violence and threat of injury or death did not seem exciting. Imagine if the roles were reversed. We would probably consider it very reasonable for Mizu to be very upset at having a sharp blade held to her throat by her husband without her consent. This does not justify her husband betraying her, though we will never know if it truly was him or her "mother". The playfight with Taigen on the other hand was just that, playing. No sharp weapons, no risk of injury or death. Of course the whole interaction ended up being a lot more positive because of it.
@ceciliai.ogwude284510 ай бұрын
@@masterfreeman117 oh we know he betrayed her. He saw her surrounded by men wanting to hurt her and turned his back on her only to come back AFTER she had saved herself. That's betrayal enough. He is a coward. You're talking about threats of violence as if he wasn't a samurai that was used to seeing knives and blood. He just couldn't handle seeing his wife like that. That is all. You cannot tell me he actually thought she'd hurt him. Why would she? He was the only one at the time that knew her complete truth. She opened up to him completely because he asked her to.
@masterfreeman11710 ай бұрын
@@ceciliai.ogwude2845 He either betrayed her by selling her out or he succumbed to fear by running away. If it is the latter then perhaps he did come back with the intention of helping her, but he was simply too late. We as the audience will never know. He asked her to spar with him, but he also asked her to stop and she refused and unsheathed her blade. Do you really think that full contact sparring with sharp blades without body armor is not very risky? It does not matter if no one actually wants to hurt the other in such a scenario, there is still a serious risk. There is a reason that real life practitioners of Sword Fighting almost never fight unarmored and with sharp swords. Usually they wear protection and their swords are dulled or made of wood. Him calling her a monster was wrong and running away instead of helping Mizu was also the wrong choice. However, I have the strong feeling that if we had a scene where for example Taigen and Mizu sparred and Mizu told Taigen to stop, Taigen refused and in the end he somehow managed hold a sharp blade to her throat (I am saying somehow because we all know that Mizu is better with the sword than Taigen) and Mizu becomes angry and says something extremely hurtful because of it, then we would all agree that at least some of the blame lies with Taigen.

This episode is, imo, was the best in the entire series. Not was the animation and action choreography stellar, but it also worked wonderfully as a exposition episode. It showed that Mizu is not the cold, bloodthirsty beast everyone thinks she is. Rather, she was a woman that, above anything else, wanted to be loved. Not just for the gentle, demure wife/daughter everyone WANTED her to be, but for ALL of her, her blue eyes and warrior spirit included. Neither her husband or her mother could love her for who she was, and that opened a gaping wound in her so deep it never fully healed. A gaping wound Mizu convinced herself could only be filled with the blood of her enemies. No wonder she adopted the persona of a monster. If you’re told all your life that you’re a demon, than that’s what you’re going to be, unless you make the choice to be something more. Im glad she made that choice by the end of the show. 10/10 series, can’t wait for season 2!

What was meant to be a playful duel took a dangerously serious turn when Mizu unsheathed her sword, bringing the blade dangerously close to his neck. I find this scene intriguing due to the ambiguity surrounding Mizio's reaction when he referred to Mizu as a "monster." It's unclear whether this was because she had taken the duel too far or whether his pride was wounded by losing to a woman. Additionally, Mizu didn't hold back in delivering an insult to Mizio by suggesting that he had lost his honor as a samurai during the duel. Furthermore, it's worth noting that Mizu betrayed herself, as exemplified by the puppet show where the ronin character, played by Mizu, exhibited a disturbing level of psychosis by murdering his wife and child for perceived betrayal. Mizu's portrayal of both the ronin and the wife in the puppet show may hint at a deeper layer of her character. We also have to notice Mizio did not have his sword with him before he "ran away on his horse" and he appeared when he got the sword after Mizu defeated the soldiers.
@velvetchiharu11 ай бұрын
I was looking for this type of comment, this show has so many details! in this scene alone a lot is communicated in the subtle facial expressions and as you said, Mizu’s behavior appears as sparring at first but then goes too far and isn’t received well. Did he say they should stop because he saw how intense she was becoming? Or was it because he was afraid of that behavior coming from a woman, his wife? It’s fascinatingly ambiguous. When she tosses him the sword you can see that he starts fighting back with anger, like maybe he was trying to actually hit her. He was a jerk for saying what he did but she kinda doesn’t have self restraint here. She was so excited to be herself again that she got a little carried away. This scene and the Ronin killing his wife and child very nicely foreshadows the character growth later on.
@DeathMessenger198810 ай бұрын
I'd say it's a bit of both. I believe Mizu didn't meant to belittle him. Unfortunately the life she had basically left her with barely ANY social skills to hold back on saying hurtful things. She grew up being taunted and ridiculed by everyone save Swordfather, and even him had a mischievous (but harmless) edge to him where he constantly poked fun at her. The same goes for her self-restraint; this is the first time she's actually swordfighting after practicing for years, so she wanted to show-off to someone she wanted to consider (and be considered by as) an equal and went a bit overboard. The poor woman only knows two modes: Bullied & Submissive or Killer Mode, with the sparks of warm human being shining in the middle. Still, his entire reaction was disproportional and pathetic. Whether or not he sold her out, he went and sold the horses in a fit of pique, then ran away when she was in danger.

I felt like if she stopped when she got hold of both weapons and he said it was enough, he would have been able to digest what just happened and probably ask her about it later. But then she pulled a low blow on his dignity then pulled a blade to his throat. I'm sure back then putting a blade to someone would have been an equivalent of putting a loaded gun at their head. Then she kissed him right after. I would have been freaked out or scared. Unnerved at the least. Supposed to be loving partners. Would have made me thought, "This girl crazy. "

Tomoe Gozen, which served Yoshinaka Kiso during the Heian period, is especially famous. During the Warring States period, there were examples of women samurai corps fighting on the battlefield. In the Edo period, samurai women protected themselves and their masters. It is common sense to carry a small knife. The main weapon used by women is the naginata. Women of samurai families always practiced the naginata. In the samurai family The husband is the master of his wife. Therefore, a wife has a duty to protect her husband. The master of MIzu is Mikio, and the husband discovers that he has a strong wife. Mikio should be happy. But Mikio was angry. I think it was because the way her practiced was disrespectful.

Both are in the wrong but Mizu to a lesser degree. She poked at this man's insecurity, about his title and status that she knew meant a great deal to him and didn't stop when he asked her to, going as far as to put a blade to his neck, guess she went a bit overboard with her excitement. He however, shouldn't had called her a monster and then literally went and turn her in like that from just this one event. They both loved each other and all of this could have been avoided if they had just given each other time to cool off and then talk it out like a real couple. I'm still not sure if the mother is involved with this but Mikio shouldn't have half-assed his way into a shitty final decision like that. But then again this was Edo Japan 😂

Most of the people are empathizing with Mizu. I also agree that she is more morally correct in this situation. BUT I have seen men, who had the gender roles and expectations of society pounded into them. If a woman, who is supposed to be inferior than them, surpasses them, it's considered a great shame. It gives them a massive inferiority complex. Also, as they lived together, he was constantly reminded of that loss. Imagine constantly living with someone who does everything better than you and shows it off without any regards for the feelings of the of the other person.Before long, their minds would be poisoned with bitterness towards their own inability. I think we need to rectify society first, so that men and women are seen as equals. Then men would be able to take the loss just as casually.

I think he was done as a warrior, honestly. Whatever got him disgraced was enough for him to get sent into the countryside in a nice house, but his lord no longer trusted him at his side. He had no battle spirit left...otherwise he would have charged down that hill when he saw his wife encircled by murderers. He asked for her to show him what she truly was. She showed him a warrior. Something that he wasn't anymore. And that realization broke him. She essentially cracked his self image in a single moment.

I mean, in my own perspective, both of them are wrong in some way or another. The Ronin might had been in love with her, but when Mizu showed her true face, he backstabbed her as if all of that are just a mare illusion, instead of convincing her bride to overcome her hatred and selfish behaviour. He literally broke all the trust that Mizu had built upon him. He obviously wrong here and he's more than deserve to get killed. How about Mizu? Well, I cannot blame her for her hatred. She's the victim of the world that she lived in. But she never let left behind her ego and vengaence even after the fact she already had a peaceful live. She's basically ignoring all the luxury of peaceful and happy live that were given to her for a mare vengeance. This scene is actually deeper than we thought. In reality, love isn't built just by accepting weaknesses and ugliness of other, but also to move aside the traits that the other part dislike about you and made you unacceptable to him/her. It is how it is. Love can only be built by the equal effort of to sides. It's not only about loving, but also about how to get yourself loved.
