Listen to what this person is saying. Anyone can cause harm to another very easily but it is harder to love even in the face of challenges, rude people, maybe they are having a bad day. But a smile or nice gesture will be appreciated. Also the world is more than money and conquering the natural and social world; it should be about looking after one another without judgement, bigotry, racism, political diversion. We need to love each other and create human connections. Let's help each other be better humans. No matter your wealth or social status anyone can and have ended up homeless.

It's not that uncommon actually. It's certainly a selective behavior, but it's not mental illness. It's more of a coping mechanism. He's ashamed, not of who he is, but of who he was. By talking about himself in the third person, he can give himself enough forgiveness to keep paying this penance he's enforcing on himself.
