+Diego Araujo Contemplating the logistics of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, think about the fact that music is something whites couldn't wrest from Blacks. It surfaced everywhere in the New World that blacks did. I trace Mento back to the mid to late 18th Century in the French Antilles. The musicians here would have been first generation. Now think about that Afrikan feel to all Caribbean music, and think about the impact it's had on, not only Rock n Roll, Central and South American feel. That particular, universal shuffle that forces you to move your hips. Afrikan music is so fucking good that it literally took on a life of its own. Minstrelsy. This also speaks to the brilliance of the European law makers and social engineers in attempting to crush every aspect of the Afrikan Soul.

This is old time calypso music, the first and foremost music that later evolved into mento, ska and later raggae music. Period! Their is no way around this truth. It's fact! Beautiful music.
@jazmar08222 жыл бұрын
no it's not this mention music that has nothing to do with Calypso. Mento did not evolve into ska. Ska came from an attempt at American R&B, Ska evolved into Rock steady, and then from Rock steady to Reggae. If I had a penny for all the people trying to force themselves into our culture I'd be rich.
@earlpitman2792 жыл бұрын
@@jazmar0822 Pleeease! You are full of yourself. I really don't want no part of that culture nor do I care about Mento music. They need to take out the Calypso name and song titles in that music unless it was a direct factor into the development of that music. Kaiso/Calypso music is the main origin of Caribbean music that was passed along orally from slavery days possible around the 17th century and onwards till present. Every island contracted a piece of it and made it into their own style and it evolved into other genres.
@amathesaxylady Жыл бұрын
Mento came before calypso as far as my research shows. And although they are similar in social commentary the feel is quite different. I did a dissertation on this
@amathesaxylady Жыл бұрын
@@jazmar0822I did a dissertation on this and you are correct. Even some Jamaicans think calypso came first and it’s embarrassing how many do not know their musical history. I played a video to a Jamaican friend who thought I was showing her something from Africa, which was not a bad thing I guess. But it was Jamaican dinky mini music and dance.
@earlpitman279 Жыл бұрын
@@amathesaxylady Sorry, I don't agree. Calypso, formerly Kaiso, started during slavery days, late 17 century. A form of communication between slaves because they were not allowed to talk, particularly in the fields. Singing was allowed and they sang in rhyme, told stories, social commentary, comedy and dance and done in ways the masters didn't or couldn't understand. First called Kaiso, the art form developed and evolved orally throughout the Caribbean Islands. It became popular in the early 1900's outside the Caribbean mostly due to tourist arrivals in the region. The music style was also adopted by Jamaican singers and bands and made it folklike and sung as folklore to tourists thereby incorporating it as Mento. Hence the many names of Mento singers and bands with Calypso names or Sobriquets (Lord, Mighty, etc.) Mento is Jamaican Calypso, although the so called Mento bands adopted or added the instrument of the banjo and other instruments. The story isn't being told factually and we just have to agree to disagree.

Mento is not calypso
@earlpitman2792 жыл бұрын
@@matthewdarby9290 I agree but why is their so much calypso lyrics, re-singing old calypso tunes and calling it Mento? Lots of calypso songs played over by Mento bands, even using the word CALYPSO in their name, songs and bands. One main difference is the usage of the banjo in Mento not used in calypso bands, etc. However, they are both Afro-Caribbean in origin. But in Trinidad particularly and the other Caribbean Islands, Calypso came from slavery days starting back in the 17th century and evolved and became popular in the wider Caribbean in the early 19th century.

Taheer, I hadn't heard the band play until last night when you commented, mentioning the Rumbakah band. But then I searched the group on Facebook, watched a couple of videos, and thought they were very good, so I liked the page. I think Rumbakah is a very good band and I'm especially happy to see some younger people playing mento so well! I don't know that any of the Blue Glaze Mento Band guys have heard Rumbakah. A couple of the members in this video have passed away, and the ones who I think are still around live in country where internet access is very limited. I do think they would appreciate your music very much, though - Rumbakah's music really is very nice. (Incidentally, I did a long study of mento music for my Ph.D. and I spent a great deal of time with Blue Glaze, I think they were one of the great mento bands; I'm also a musician and played banjo on the Jolly Boys "Great Expectation" album - love that there's a banjo player in the group! Taheer, are you a member of Rumbakah?)
