Simone Leigh said at a talk at the Hirshorn that she was inspired by the blue incorporated in Black hair in comics, too!

My favorite shade of blue is Yves Klein blue and I'm so happy to discover this video because I learned a lot about how blue is used over time and history. Thank you 💙

What an odd but wonderful subject. And, as usual, you have brought the intrigue. Just a wild guess here but I'm agreeing with you and going with indigo die as Simone Leigh's purpose of blue in her work. Those textiles ARE west Africa. Of course many other countries use indigo die but the textiles from Thailand, Japan, or Guatemala are all very different from the W. African ones, as they are different from each other. I have a little collection going. Little Girl Blue is one of my all time favorite albums. Ms. Simone BRINGS the blues in the most quiet and heart breaking way. I was trying to describe her voice to a 15 year old white boy the other day and all I could come up with was "creamy". Her version of Mood Indigo is as good as it gets, ditto for I Loves you Porgy. Both of those songs I have heard by many, many other artists but no one does it for me like she does. I have seen Krzysztof Kieslowski's Blue twice now. When it came out (yes.... I am THAT old) and again on video a few years back, but thanks for reminding me of how much I loved it. I think I'll watch it again this week. Always a pleasure.

Yes, her (Nina Simone) voice has always reminded me of a cello.. really strong and heartbreaking and takes the wind right out of you all that once. Thank you

If you havent already, I would suggest reading, "Blue: In Search of Nature's Rarest Color" it mentions a lot of things that were in the video, and it also goes into the science of it in nature. :)
