The story takes place in 1789. The Drift didn't hit until 1780, and he's black so... kind of hard for him to avoid. I didn't really linger on it because I don't like the idea of making his backstory revolve heavily around his race, but it influences a lot of his other motives. His anger at being swindled by his captain, his bleak outlook on the world, his strong desire to be important and not be forgotten, etc.
