I know for a fact it helps. My place of business is a barber shop. My boss uses really bright LEDs. With high K which is high blue light coming off of them. I noticed I couldn’t look at lights or my phone at night after working 10 hours under those lights. I didn’t know it was the light I just thought I was focusing on cutting hair so much I was getting eye strain. All my symptoms pointed to eye strain. Blurred vision, extremely light sensitive all lights appeared like they had a halo around them as if looking out of a fogged up windshield. I ordered some eye strain blue light blocking glasses from Amazon for like 16 bucks. Once I started wearing them it went away. Hasn’t bothered me since. I recently upped my glasses to some manhattan fade Felix grays in the hopper. But blue light harming your eyes is real. I used to weld for a living and I’ve burned my eyes from welding and it felt very similar to how that felt. I’m sure devices are doing damage on such a small scale it isn’t noticed but it was most definitely noticed when dealing with very bright LEDs with high k (blue light). Oh and btw I mentioned you as to how I heard about Felix gray.

Night mode an hour or two before bedtime (if you so absolutely need to be in front of the computer) + close your eyes when in bed (which you most probably will do when sleeping) ;) Night mode looks horrible but usually, you got a slider to adjust. Start with a little blue light reduction, or you will feel all going sepia like Oliver (and myself) don't like.

Im studying programming which requires me to be in front of a computer for long periods of time and the light emitted from the monitor makes my eyes hurt to the point where it gets annoying and I use a blue light filter app on my pc and lower the brightness, which helps but still it doesn't solve the problem
@EyeInfluence5 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't the blue light. The problem is your eye muscles are fatigued. I suggest taking regular breaks to allow your eyes to rest. About every 20 minutes you should rest your eyes for roughly 20 seconds. Also, during that time look away from your screen and try to focus on something that is 20 feet away or further. It's called the 20/20/20 rule. It should really help you out.

A question about the Melatonin / Sleep part of the video: Studies were quoted that said, looking at a self-luminous device can suppress Melatonin by 23%. But is there any evidence that concluded by how much Melatonin is reduced when filtering Bluelight while keeping the brightness the same? I mean, I expect that Melatonin is still reduced by a lot having the light or screen on. So how much of that 23% is supposed to be from bluelight?
@EyeInfluence5 жыл бұрын
That's a great question with many variables. Our melatonin levels naturally reduce as we age. Our peak melatonin levels usually happen when we're in our teens and slowly starts to diminish as we get older. I've seen studies show that melatonin levels remain "normal" when using any kind of blue light filter. Just keep in mind that normal is different for everyone.

Great videos, Oliver. Thank you. Lately eyeglass stores seem to carry a lens coating which has a blue block on it but instead of being yellow or Amber it has a blue cast. And I'm wondering how a blue coating can filter out blue light. Is this something you've considered or researched?
@EyeInfluence5 жыл бұрын
The reason these coatings have a blue (or sometimes purple) color is because that is what the coating is "bouncing" off. There are 2 ways to block/filter blue light. 1 is from the coating and 2 is from the lens itself. The coating doesn't filter blue light, it bounces/reflects it off. Lenses like the BluTech lenses, have the filter inside the lens and thus don't need to have the bluish color on the coating. More expensive computer glasses tend to use the in-lens filter and lower priced options tend to use the coating because it cost less to make. Hope this helps.

the greatest advantage to wearing glasses is that you can get blue light filtering glasses that are virtually colorless. All software options cut the blue light spectrum which causes the sepia tone. So, if we are going to be cautious of blue light exposure, we should pay more attention to outdoors more than indoors" I pretty sure I didn't say sunlight should be avoided or that it is bad. My take from this video is: _don't put blue filters on your prescription glasses_ . Many people wear their glasses the entire time they are awake. If you want to preserve your circadian rhythm, what will the blue blocking coating do? Think about it. Natural daylight has a lot of blue. If you block blue light from your eyes 24/7, it's as if you're living in a land of perpetual twilight. THAT cannot be good! And some people, just before going to bed, lay down in their bed and play with their phones. They watch videos, chat with friends, play games, etc. And since they are already in bed, they're not wearing their glasses. If your blue filters are on your prescription glasses, you're blocking blue light during the day time, and getting blue light just before bed. You're literally doing the absolute worst thing possible. Blue blocking coatings on prescription glasses are the absolute stupidest idiotic idea possible. Optometrists and opticians who recommends it are harming their customers. Ophtalmologists who suggests this to their patients should lose their license. Remember the hippocratic oath? If you want them, they should be clip-ons or wrap-around sunglasses worn over your prescription glasses like industrial safety glasses. Because the times you wear them needs to match the sun's position in the sky.
