Monk has such a sarcastic and aggressiv way of playing, but in a good way. He doesn't try to avoid the conflict he is searching for it. Thats why I like his music so much. It's pure Art!

I cottoned on to Monk in the late 1960's and early '70's, when all my contemporaries were already listening to rock. I took two of my friends to a concert of Monk's at Carnegie Hall (or Philharmonic Hall, I don't remember). They thought I was crazy but I was mesmerized. He has never been surpassed in my book.

I feel like only someone as mad and as ingenious as Monk could possibly understand this music on a deep level. He'll just do these strange little repetitive things with exotic chords, and it makes me wonder what's going through his head. I think he heard music in a profoundly different way than everybody else.

Bwaaaaah! he crax me up! I studied his technique and voicing . When I listen today , I mean REALLY listen I DO hear the "outside" intervals he uses in his comping. In his second solo he is only changing the top note of the interval , then he does the same interval but moving up or down by whole or half steps. I love the point where he feels the need to leave his own rhythm section. Then listen to the bass, the only shred of harmony available , step in cause he has no other choice until Monk comes back from outer space. God bless our Monk.

In a world of musicians to be absolutely unique speaks volumes for Monk's talent. Here he is both asymetrical and abstract in soloing and yet he quotes C Jam Blues. A very fine player and composer indeed. Thank for the clip.

You know, at certain times in both Monk's comping and his solos, I can hear a kind of pre hip hop. And I also thought that part of what made Charlie Rouse an ideal "foil" for Monk's compositions was that Rouse struck me as more of a R&B player who nevertheless knew jazz "language" and could therefore solo effectively. Especially as regards Thelonious' musical universe.

Sharing this video is a public service. How Monk plays within the beat? Dude is a time lord. They're all amazing and we're lucky to be able to see and hear them. This music: timeless.

CMATCT, as John McEnroe used to shout... "You cannot be serious!" Fine if you don't like jazz, tho' I'd say that's your loss, but ... "No structure, no continuity, discord and disharmony"? Dunno what to say, except perhaps please listen again. Anybody help me with band? I think the tenor player is Charlie Rouse, but don't recognise the bass player and drummer... and what a brilliant drum solo using only cymbal and snare... love it!

Happy birthday to Thelonious Sphere Monk, on what would've been his 101th birthday today, Feb 2018, one of the greatest Jazz musicians of all time and one of first creators of modern jazz & bebop, famed also for some of his magical session's at the Milton's Playhouse, he soon went on to become one Blue Note labels biggest artists

No doubt his music is beyond full comprehension but his contributions are real to composition, the expansion of jazz language via his less-stable chords, his off-kilter rhythmic displacements/repetitions of fragments

I mean really..., how many I-VII voicings did he splash on this take? And he carried them through scale wise. It's a perfect example , and instructional video, of jazz chordal harmony. He is purposely and repeatedly playing the same changes completely different every time. It's brilliant but obvious at the same time to the trained ear and schooled musician. Gotta love it...
