Blue Origin New Glenn Seriously Damaged during Test! Starliner Final Decision...
What a humiliation!
Just as Blue Origin was gearing up for its debut flight, two serious issues have surfaced with New Glenn’s hardware.
Is this game over?
Plus, this weekend, NASA will reveal its final decision on when and how Starliner will return.
Meanwhile, Amazon is stepping up its game by upgrading its systems to boost satellite launch operations.
Let’s dive into all of this on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Blue Origin New Glenn Seriously Damaged during Test! Starliner Final Decision...
Since the beginning of this year, Blue Origin has been intensifying its efforts to prepare New Glenn for its debut flight. Expectations for the first orbital launch are higher than ever. However, recent developments have dealt a significant blow to that momentum, with two consecutive failures reported by Bloomberg.
So, what happened?
The first failure occurred during the transportation of New Glenn’s upper portion to a storage hangar. During this process, the structure crumpled on its own. The cause has been attributed to worker error. Specifically, the rocket was exposed to varying environmental conditions-high temperatures and humidity outside in Florida, followed by sudden exposure to significantly cooler, air-conditioned conditions inside the storage hangar. This abrupt change in pressure within the upper portion was not adequately monitored or managed, leading to a hardware failure due to a lack of necessary decompression measures.
Blue Origin New Glenn Seriously Damaged during Test! Starliner Final Decision...
While the first incident happened during transport, the second occurred during testing. Another upper portion of New Glenn experienced an explosion, likely due to excessive pressure during stress testing.
It is important to note that these two incidents involve hardware intended for the second and third flights, not the upcoming debut mission. The second flight is currently scheduled for around August 2025, approximately 10 months after the initial launch.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Blue Origin engineers are working diligently to resolve these issues. A company spokesperson expressed confidence, stating, "We’re constantly testing new hardware and configurations. Those tests, including ones with anomalies, allow us to make our future hardware and systems more robust. We are ramping up our production efforts across the board and looking forward to even more flights next year."

To answer your question of "How", the huge tanks will be pressurized with propellent. They buckled inward because they're not designed to withstand a negative pressure on the inside. Someone failed to do their job of opening the valves to equalize the pressure inside the tanks.

@@bio-techlarry9602 I am aware of that having a pressurized tank or tanks to prevent this type of thing. But to go from somewhat warm location to a cooler one and it starts collapsing, they have serious issues. @@BluhmGardens Blue Origin has launched successfully just 25 times in the 24 years they have existed. Straight up and straight down, not to orbit, just barely over the Karman Line. Meanwhile SpaceX made it to orbit in just 6 1/2 years and has since launched over 370 rockets to orbit. SpaceX has launched over 6,800 of the 14,450 total satellites launched by mankind since Sputnik. Blue Origin has launched...checks notes...absolutely nothing to orbit. The problem is that the air cooling down causes the pressure to drop, causing the tank to be under compression, which it's not designed for. When they're loading fuel the tank would be pressurized

Interestingly enough, NASA had two similar incidents in the Apollo days. The first happened when Apollo 10 was on the pad. Its first stage (the S-IC stage) was loaded with RP-1 fuel. During a scheduled power outage, RP-1 prevalves opened (since power was not applied to keep them closed) and some RP-1 drained out, leading to the crumpling of the S-IC's forward RP-1 bulkhead. After analysis, they decided it was safe to pop the bulkhead back by (essentially) slightly overfilling the RP-1 tank, and the stage successfully launched the mission. The other (more similar) incident happened after the Apollo program was over and NASA was putting its leftover hardware on display. From 1979 until last fall, a Saturn IB was vertically displayed at the I-65 Ardmore Welcome in northern Alabama. The second (S-IVB) stage was shipped from KSC to Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans and then, in September 1977, to Marshall Space Flight Center in preparation for this display. When the S-IVB was shipped from KSC, the propellant tanks were sealed, rather than the normal procedure of shipping and storing the stage with tanks vented to equalize pressure. One night in early 1978, it got down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit at MSFC, causing both the LH2 and LOX tanks to deflect inward several inches due to the negative internal tank pressure. The MSFC engineers applied a positive pressure of 0.31 psi on Feb 13 1978, causing the tank deflections to return to their original contour. They then permanently vented the tanks to preclude a recurrence. While the first stage of this Saturn IB was put on display at Ardmore, it was found that the S-IVB stage was too fragile to withstand the anticipated wind loads, so it is now on display at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville.

They have an *unknown* failure source, and *unknown* condition of critical equipment, and *multiple* safer return options. The only justifications for doing a crewed return at this point are reputational loss (both at Boeing and NASA for failing with their crony contract award favoring Boeing) and contract loss for Boeing. Returning crewed would be a decision based on *political* and *profit* motives more so than any technical or scientific evaluation of the risk.

I applaud all of the private space-faring enterprises that strive to make exploration beyond Earth economical & commonplace. However, uniformity in design is a must in crucial areas. Docking rings for the various spacecraft should always be universal, even for the Chinese. Space suit designs Or adaptors must also be universal for all spacecraft life support systems. Our future in space depends on each companies future success & viability. I hope to see Dream Chaser online sooner than later. Quick turnaround vehicles are a must for a vibrant space-faring economy.

The Falcon 9 was being developed beginning in 2005 and by 2024, nearly 20 years, it is a mature and refined launch system. The Space Shuttle was retired in 2011 and NASA then tendered an offer for the development of launch capabilities to replace the Shuttle and several companies proposed new systems to meet NASA's requirements. Among the most crucial to NASA was redundancy and competition and to that end they selected two consortiums to build these launch systems. SpaceX had a huge advantage given the Falcon 9 was already flying. Starliner was 9 years later than SpaceX in getting a rocket into LEO and have been trying to catch up but Boeing being Boeing they can't seem to figure out the most basic things about spacecraft such as pressurization of the tube to prevent it from being crushed like a Coke can -- with huge changes in temperature they didn't apparently remember first year Chemistry: PV = nRT. At this point Boeing has screwed the pooch and they may never be able to fulfill the requirement they signed onto 15 years ago. If Boeing does fail and NASA has to start the process of finding another launch provider I think Boeing should be required to return every penny of the more than $4B NASA has given them and maybe a hefty fine on top. I think NASA will need some time to decide on the way forward both to give Boeing a chance, another chance, to make good on their contract, but also to see how Blue Origin works out as they might well be the only viable alternative to Boeing. One last point ... the SpaceX fan-bois that are demanding Boeing be eliminated and SpaceX given 100% of the job with no competition or redundancy -- YOU ARE NOT HELPING ANYONE BUT ELON!

I go pretty easy on the new space company failures. They are trying to learn from the ground up. The difference between Blue Origin and Spacex is their ability to recover from damage to the rockets. SpaceX is a manufacturing monster and can quickly build replacements. Blue Origin doesn’t have this ability.

It's NOT a humiliation! Building rockets is horrendously hard. Build re-useable rockets that land on ships is even harder. The team at Blue do great work and will bounce back stronger & better.

Yes…. Blue Origin like many companies have problems designing rockets … but such a failure caused by temperature control you would have thought was basic when choosing materials in construction…. But a catastrophic failure is hard to believe …. Competition is good as all designs are tried and tested … leading to the. Best designs… Space X … learn and seem to implement changes as they need them.. and that is why they are leading in design of space rockets..

Let's be honest - there is no competitor to BO as no others have failed as often. They have yet to launch to LEO, AND to rub salt in an open wound, BO had to buy a ride on SpaceX to put Kuiper-sats in orbit.
