When this was first announced 5 years ago, I thought it was a really cool idea: a rapidly reusable rocket to carry crew into a microgravity environment... But then five years passed and nothing has happened with this, so SpaceX went ahead and can now carry crew into *orbit* to the *ISS* on a reusable (albeit not fully reusable) rocket.
@clancy56003 жыл бұрын
So? this is a vehicle tailored to a different kind of customer, someone who can't pay the 55 million dollar ticket to orbit. it's quite impossible to compare these 2 vehicles since they serve completely different purposes.
@AlexSchendel3 жыл бұрын
@@clancy5600 While you have a good point there, I'd have two things to say about that: 1. It's 55 million/7 because you can have 7 crew members per flight on the Crew Dragon. That said, 8 million is still certainly very expensive. 2. Just based on the pace of development with the New Shepard, I wouldn't be fully surprised if Starship/Superheavy is fully stacked and ready to fly by the time New Shepard actually flies crew. In which case, it would be a matter of time until New Shepard loses even its price advantage.
@clancy56003 жыл бұрын
@@AlexSchendel Nope, it's 55 million *per seat* for NASA. You're right, 7 crewmembers would reduce the price per seat by a bit, but it's still significantly higher than the 200-400k that New Shepard will probably cost. And also, it's unclear if the 7 seat crew dragon would ever fly due to issues with the forces during splashdown for those bottom 3 seats. And Starship? Starship isn't even close to flying an operational payload, much less crew. And the suborbital tourist market isn't what Starship is going for, either.
@Markle2k3 жыл бұрын
@@AlexSchendel It's not only more per seat than you say, but you have to recompense NASA for the consumables (food, fuel and oxygen) you use on the ISS. That's something like $30k/day. It's either going to be embarrassing or showcase priorities if Vulcan flies with BE-4s before New Shepard lifts a single sentient passenger.
@chucklesmcgee71703 жыл бұрын
Starship is targeting orbital flight by July/August. They built an assembly line so there is a new ship per week. Would not be outside the realm of possibility for them to deliver their first batch of a few hundred Starlink satellites to orbit by end of year

When you have 15 launches that all go as expected, you are not taking risks and learning very much.
@Raptor23 жыл бұрын
They aren't iterating on the rocket because the whole point of the rocket is to be very safe + launch humans. Blue is like a traditional aerospace company in some ways, so just because you don't see them doing a very risky flight doesn't mean that they aren't testing other ways. Also, the first flight was itself a big risk, and they ended up losing the booster.
