Basswood trees line our street, and my honey is light and very floral because of it. I agree with you. Great tasting, honey! Last year, my bees made nearly a hundred pounds of it and walking past the trees when they are blooming, you can hear the trees humming from 25'.

And speaking of silver linings the cold wet weather has eliminated the grasshopper infestation we had last year so far . Canola around mr bison farm is just starting i we nt west 1/2 mile and 2 south i counted 12 quarter sections of canola .. If youre bees need work i found a huge honey crop for you to harvest .! Its wet and almost as hot as your weather in lakemont now

Yep. One more rain is all l need.. and then l watch it on the radar passing right there next to me. It happens like that almost every summer. Funny when you depend on one rain.. will there be a flow or not. I agree.. we make queens only when bees want to do it. I stopped forcing it. And I do my last to change the production hives queens by supercedure when I cage the old queens for brood break before dearth. So l can do it all at the same time. Treatment and queens. Than we whayt for September

I have a question about reading the nectar availability of a tree like the Basswood you examined. When the flowers are in bloom at the six foot level, easy for a person to observe, what does that say for the flowers at the top of the tree? Have they already bloomed? Do they bloom later? The same time?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 4 ай бұрын
Most of the trees I'm familiar with bloom from top to bottom at the same time.

Question: Why is sweet corn pollen no good for bees vs field corn?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 4 ай бұрын
Sweet corn is used as table corn like corn on the cob, canned corn, etc. and is often sprayed heavily for ear worms. Field corn is used for flour, animal feed and ethanol and is rarely sprayed.

If you could convince the organic cult to let them put Bt in sweet corn they wouldn't have to do all that spraying.

Generally no. If it dies out for some reason we clean house before repopulating. It's been two years since we opened it.

How many times I should treat with acid oxalic on this time one or more?I don’t check for mites
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 4 ай бұрын
Oxalic acid vaporization only kills the mites on the bees and not the ones in sealed brood so there must be many treatments only four days apart to be affective this time of year.

I have two supers full of honey but they are not capped over, does that mean it's not ready for harvest or to much work for the bees to cap in this heat?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 4 ай бұрын
The only way to know for sure is to do a test with a refractometer. It can go either way depending on conditions. . It doesn't matter for us because we put our supers in a drying room for a few days before extracting.

What's the difference between field corn and sweet corn?
@bobbinnie9872
