You're not playing the bass but I think the bass drum is there but we just can't hear it on the record, they didn't mic properly

Dj fontana didn't like the bass drum always played lightly but yeah may be alittle too low in this mix great performance on this!

They explain in another video that D.J. Fontanta didn't use the bass drum aside from for acents (same way drummers usually use the crash) since it was just too loud and stood out against the rest of the band so they're playing it in the same way.

There is some live video out there from 1956 where you can see DJ playing light straight quarter notes on the kick drum in other songs from this period, like Don't Be Cruel. But you can't hear it at all because it's not mic'd. Frankly we just didn't have good enough microphones or recording / mixing equipment at the time. 8 track recording didn't come along until later that decade.
