Making a phone call from a helicopter using built-in communication system in the 80's. Fascinating. 🖖
@TheBandMan3 ай бұрын
It was possible in the 80s. My brother and grandfather knew how, it required someone with a base station radio to patch the radio into the phone after dialing the number. It wouldn't be full-duplex though (ie. couldn't talk and listen at the same time)
@rolo37623 ай бұрын
The helicopter was established to be designed for surveillance. It had all sorts of cameras, infrared vision, mic's that could listen through windows, ability to remotely search police records etc, and could tap phone calls. It was meant to be the ultimate infringement on civil liberties which is why Schieder stole it so he could be a whistle blower. So it made sense that this helicopter could make a phone call.

I love Roy Scheider's wife (Candy Clark). A real strong female character and a hell of a driver. That woman takes no sh*t from anyone and so cute. Reminds me of my daughter's mother. I've watched this movie a million times, still aging well because of the real helicopter stunts and car chases; good script, great music score and Oscar worthy performances; no CGI and no message or lectures.

You would think that the Police Helocopter crew, seeing that Blue Thunder had a mini gun at the front, would realise they are vastly out gunned. The moment the pilot traverses the mini gun in your direct, you know you are screwed
@Rigel_Chiokis3 ай бұрын
They used a Gazelle helicopter for this movie and it was heavily modified for the part. Heavy being the key word there. It was reported at the time that the extended canopy shifted the weight of the helicopter so that close to 70% of the weight was in front, causing it to be nose heavy. Stunt pilots could only fly it for 15 minutes before becoming fatigued and it could not fly backwards any longer. Flying backwards was what they had to do to get it hover.
@lancemurdoc67443 ай бұрын
Yes, the loop was done with a model...but anyway we all wanted to fly the blue thunder.

I loved how Blue Thunder the movie merged into AirWolf the series.
@ll78683 ай бұрын
Airwolf started out as a 1983 Magnum P.I. episode starring Willie Lucking (probably best known as Piney Winston in Sons Of Anarchy) as an ex-military pilot turned Indiana Jones-like adventurer who crashed a small plane into Magnum's pool, he was supposed to get a spin-off but it never got green-lit. Glen A. Larson and Donald P. Belisario, creators of Magnum P.I. then rewrote the pilot episode of the failed spin-off and it became Airwolf. Blue Thunder had it's own tv series that went up against Airwolf, it aired January - April, 1984 and was cancelled after 11 episodes mostly because Airwolf, which aired from Jan. 1984 - August 1987, was more popular, probably because it had one of the best themes of all time.

BUT my brother has a 6' Airwolf replica that he paid nearly $5K (CND) for back in 2012 and never lets anyone fly it, so after he tells me he'll let me fly it when he's dead and he wills it to me I said "Blue Thunder's better anyway" which really pissed him off so I keep doing it.

technically it's not the engine exhaust. The engine exhaust can be seen on the helicopter. That nice shiny tube in the back. (background information: The helicopter was created from an SA341 Gazelle helicopter, as information can be found in many places on the net) But why 02 is on the side of the helicopter, I have already thought about it many times
@wrongway33633 ай бұрын
From what I read on that subject many years ago according to the writers, the 02 was the second prototype of the Apache helicopter program, with the 01 being what they called the Longbow Apache. Both prototypes being vastly different.
