I bought a Blue Yeti microphone from someone locally for only $20. She said it was brand new and just didn't work. Since these microphones retail for over $100 I figured it was worth a shot to try and fix it. In this video, I will show you how I replaced the USB port on the Yeti Blue and ultimately was able to get a working microphone!

This is a common design flaw when moving the microphone around with the mini B USB cable plugged in. There isn't any plastic to keep the metal from bending and making the connection loose. After fixing/ replacing the female metal case to hold the cable in I would also buy a 6" extension cable which then you could enlarge the microphone base USB slot so it accepts the male end of the extension and use a piece of black tape to hold them together. You could then put back together the microphone cover and use the other end of the short 6" cable which has a female mini B USB end covered by rectangular plastic which will allow you move the microphone with no more damage.

This happens to a lot of Blue Yeti mics. The cable that they provide is an awful choice. When the microphone is angled down, the cable bangs into the back of the microphone mount, which bends it sideways, breaking the USB Mini B male end and, at worst, destroying the inside of the Mini B female port. The solution is to purchase a USB A to USB Mini B cable that is right-angled instead of straight. Amazon Basics sells these for $5 or so and their low profile won't cause the port and cable to be smashed every time you angle the microphone down.

It would be easier to remove the old USB mini port if you use a solder sucker. You heat the solder until it starts to melt then use the solder sucker to, literally, sucks up the liquid solder. A solder sucker is around $5 to $10 and can be used over and over. It also means you won't be applying so much heat to the board and potentially burning out the other circuitry. This way the holes on the circuit board will also be clean and easy to install a new port.

My yeti is doing something really weird. The USB isn't messed up or anything because when I plug in my headphones I can hear audio from my computer and when I talk I can hear myself through the mic and it sounds fine. But when I record myself the mic audio is all messed up and makes noises that sound kind of like a fart. I have no clue what the issue is. I also tried using different cables and plugged the mic into another computer and it still is doing the same thing. What's weird is when I have my headphones in I can hear myself like a live playback of my voice from the microphone and the quality sounds fine. I'm so confused why its doing this. This process no longer works. Probably because too many people abused the system, the creator of the video included. Warrenty replacements now requires proof of original purchase from an authorized seller (must be a new purchase), as well as photos clearly showing the damage. They will not just replace your mic so easily anymore. Especially if you have opened your mic and proceed to destroy the IC board by burning it.

The red liquid is probably threadlocker which is designed to keep the screws from loostening. The issue is typically the USB port that becomes loose with then cable is pulled. I put a link to the components in the video description you could try to repair it yourself

@@CarolinaCowboys Here's the trick for next time (solder expert): put a glob of extra solder on each pin, then get liquid solder flux and put some on each pin, then the braid will soak it up like water and leave clean pin holes!

Such a crappy design for this port, and also a poor choice to use this mini connector. I almost broke mine within 30 minutes of setting it up, when I didn't leave anough slack in the cable on the moveable arm. There is quite a bit of space in this microphone and I have now ordered a USB-B full size panel mount socket, which I am going to replace the USB-B Mini plug for. They should have always have used this larger plug. This microphone has a bigger brother than uses a XLR microphone socket, and it is in this very location that I plan to put the larger USB-B port on my microphone.
