According to Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, the lead singer, one of the two guitarists on the song and the writer of the song, the song is NOT about suicide. In interviews, he has repeatedly said that the song was written after he received a bad diagnosis from his doctor - a heart condition. He feared that he would die at a young age. This song was his coping with the diagnosis. He wrote about the inevitability of death, and that we should not fear it. It was also the expression of his hope that he would be reunited with loved ones in the afterlife. Many people just take the Romeo and Juliet line out of context with the rest of the song and think that this song is about suicide, or worse, that it encourages suicide. Neither of those are true.

In the cover art for this, in the Magicians hand, he is holding Tarot cards. The order is as follows: Death: Signifying an End of things, and new beginnings after. The Empress: Signifying creation of life, romance, art, or new business. The Emperor: Suggestive of stability and security in life and that you are in charge of your life now setting up your own rules and boundaries. The Sun: Portends good fortune, happiness, joy and harmony. It represents the universe coming together and agreeing with your path and aiding forward movement into something greater/Ascension.

Buck Dharma lead singer and lead guitar player wrote the song all by himself using a four track cassette tape recorder. A doctor had told him he was dying, but he didn't.
