This is a terrific example of what sets the mastery of Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser apart from all of his peer guitarists of rock! Yes this was live from the ‘81 - ‘82 tour if memory serves. The singer, Eric Bloom, wrote this song with Sci-Fi legendary author Michael Moorcock and it was featured in the classic graphic novel series turned into a movie, “Heavy Metal”, and remains to this day one of the greatest guitar solos of all time! Props to the late great Allen Lanier who buoyed this classic with his phenomenal keyboards and Joe Bouchard a superb musician who once again serves the song first and foremost with his fabulous backing vocal and bass! Rick Downey is the amazing road crew leader and drum tech that seldom gets his due for taking over the drums when one of the best ever, Al Bouchard was pushed out of the band mid-tour due largely to difficulties within the band and his battle with our-of-control “chemical research” at the time. Rick had big shoes to fill and was kept as the drummer in studio for their next album, the first without Albert Bouchard. A great reaction to a wonderful performance BizMatic! 👍🏻 🤘🏻

This is proof that no rock guitarist can come close to the talent of Buck Dharma. GREATEST GUITARIST EVER!!! This is not a recording. The band was formed in 1967. The year I was born. I have been a fan of their since the early 80s and just saw them live last year for the first time. The lead singer on this is Eric Bloom. He and Buck are the only two original members left with the band. Check out "The Alchemist" from their 2020 release The Symbol Remains, recorded entirely remotely due to COVID. "Don't Fear the Reaper", my personal favorite, and their biggest US hit. It's a must for those new to Blue Oyster Cult. Thanks for the reaction. Peace, Man.

My all-time favorite BÖC tune. I saw them on the Fire of Unknown Origin tour 40 years ago. Thanks for reacting to this one, Biz. I recommend listening to the studio version when you get a free minute. Most Classic Rock radio stations only play two BÖC songs; Don't Fear the Reaper and Burning for You. Cool tunes, for sure, but they have so much more music to explore and enjoy. (IMO, one of the reasons why terrestrial radio is dying. Lack of variety... no deep cuts. Of course, streaming services have obviously contributed to the demise of terrestrial radio stations)

@@bugvswindshield I can't count how many times I've seen them in Washington. First time was at Memorial Stadium in Seattle, Summer Jam '80, w/Sabbath headlining the show that featured Riot and Molly Hatchet as openers. 2nd time was in the Kingdome, Summer Jam '82, middle band of 5-band set consisting of (in order of appearance) Bryan Adams, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, (BOC), Loverboy, and headliner Foreigner. 3rd time was New Year's Eve 1983/84 at the Tacoma Dome, middle band in a 3-band line-up with opener Aldo Nova, headliner (Your One-Way Ticket to Midnight!) Sammy Hagar. Saw them in CA a few times in the mid-late 80s while stationed there. Saw them MANY times in the 90s in the Seattle/Tacoma/Kitsap area in bars/ballrooms/outdoor venues, I can't even count. I'd go see them every time they came thru town. I haven't seen them in about 20 yrs, though. I got old. 😢 They fucking killed it every time.

This is why BOC is _still_ such a monster live show, and how cool it was to hear a song about PTSD in 1981. Fantasy writer Michael Moorcock brought his dark side into this and BOC is the right band. Hey, Biz....listen to BOC's song "Mirrors" next for another killer tune about psychology!
@HistoryNerd8765 Жыл бұрын
A great song about Trauma in general. Depression, Addiction, PTSD, whatever it is, the song completely encompasses the feeling.
@JohnHoulgate6 ай бұрын
Very glad you did a reaction video to the live version of this song. That is Eric Bloom's live singing on this. He was an R&B singer back in the 60s when he and his band played at college parties. Buck Dharma is a legendary guitarist and this is one of his signature live solos. The song has a dark, foreboding theme that characterizes the what is in the lyrics. The long guitar solo is not in the studio version. I guess they wanted to save that for the live shows. I think it's one of BOC's epic masterpieces along with Astronomy. You did the song justice here. People go see them live for those long guitar solos. They turn ordinary songs into epic sound journeys. This recording gave you a taste of it.

My interpretation only, and I could be wrong: the song reflects the suffering of war survivors not only with physical damage, but with the mental damage of PTSD. I've known these heroes. They were tossed into the meat grinder. And yet they continue to struggle with everyday life after trying to cope with what would cause most of us to lose our shite. 'Nuff said. But not enough.
