Y'know, I really don't think BlooQ gets enough credit for playing with the ultra-exposed tuning they have. It seems to reveal even the slightest bits of dirt every season, and I can't imagine how good the players on the line are for sounding so clean 90% of the time with such unforgiving conditions.

The corps purchase a new set of drums almost every year, then either sell or auction off old drums I believe. I know for sure SCV gets new ones every year, since they use custom lacquers instead of drum wraps. Not positive about other groups though.

@@t3hm4zn Possibly. I've seen it done. There's video of SCV 2016 that someone shot that I really like where they were down by the tenors and they focused the lens where you could catch enough of the snares and enough of the tenors where you could see what everyone was doing.

@@lmaoitsmee1812 Yep. It is one of the best. Mainly cause of the stationary camera. The viewer isn't getting motion sickness from the camera operator panning left and right a million times in the video. The reason it's a big deal is you have to think about the person watching 10 years later. You don't want them having to leave your video to go see on someone else's video what was going on. Maybe they can do 3 stationary cameras and then release 3 videos at the same time of different angles of the performance. That way it would sound better and you'd still get to see everyone's playing. But what do I know... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good Job overall dude. Make sure to keep those diddles in TIME with the MET. Get married to that Metronome...Live it and LOVE it. It will save your life every time. Also, consider practicing in front of a mirror and work on getting those taps down to a lower height. Those taps get a little high sometime and the sound quality and musically is lost leaving no dynamics. Best of Luck!!! 🙂

Now theres a name I haven't heard in a while. My college room mate marched snare with Phantom the year after Ken aged out and he was hanging around Phantom according to him and he said Marty really didn't give him any love. Guess he was a little over the edge back then too. I can't say. He was an in- your-face kind of player though. We had his snare book in college. Very detailed stuff to say the least. Maybe he's mellowed. I think he lives in Florida now.

First, yes, they're clean. That's cool. But I still remain totally confused - and I know I'll be flamed by fanboys for this but - what is the point of coaching from behind a drumset while navigating an iPad? I can't help but think that would only distract from what Roger's supposed to be doing: paying attention to the players and providing correction. It is simply irrational to think one would be able to coach better when all four limbs are actively engaged in something else. If the point is to teach "feel", the simple beats he plays could very quickly be programmed - or even played in by him - into sequencing software that would allow the same "advantage" of "feeling a beat" to their beats (as contrasted to playing to a simple click) without him having to be actively involved in producing the beats/feel in real time when he's supposed to be coaching. Second, WTF is Rudy doing there?? According to the BD app, he's still listed as a coach in 2021.

From my limited understanding of why they use a kit: during finals week, lot warmups cannot use a traditional metronome + amplification. Most drumlines simply have one of the instructors click sticks to keep time. The Bluecoats do something different, using a kit instead, since 2015. If you watch early season rehearsal & lot videos of the Bluecoats drumline, when there are no sound restrictions, they use a met instead of a kit. Near the end of the season, as Championship week looms, the drumline is usually so dialed in that Roger doesn't have to pay attention to everything in the lot; at that point, it's the techs that look for the small minor things that might need fixing.

@@WilliamBottka haha While I'll be the first to say the Bluecoats aren't my favorite corp, I do appreciate everyone who participates in the activity. I think it's mostly their fans who are so anti-Blue Devil that put me off to the Bluecoats. The way I see it, they, like most other high-level drumlines, are fairly derivative of the Blue Devils. As such, casting shade toward the originators of so much of what they do doesn't make sense to me. More, despite there being scores involved in the activity (though not this year), I think it's silly for anyone to be anti- any corp. At the end of the day, this is art, not a sport. I believe the scores are simply meant to inspires the participants to improve as the season goes on, not to create rivalries or animosity toward any corps. I went to DCI Finals in 2019 with a musician friend who'd never participated in band during his school years nor ever seen any DCI shows. He was totally moved by it and commented repeatedly how he thought it was so cool how each corp had their own style, musically, visually, etc. Though I went in a Blue Devil fan rooting for the Blue Devils, I truly enjoyed almost every corp.

You created an argument in your own head to justify your comments towards the staff and the culture around the bluecoats. Also The claim that all of Roger’s success comes from only the Blue Devils is absurd. Completely disregarding his Velvet Knights years and his own success as an educator. Claiming that Bluecoats only found success from ex Blue Devils is pretentious. You also claimed that most high level drum lines are derivative of The Blue Devils. Completely disregarding people like Paul Rennick, Mike Jackson, McNutt and other East cost and Midwestern drumlines.

Go through and read comments on Blue Devils and Bluecoats drumline YT threads - the animosity I described is there and to me it also mostly appears one-sided. Also, I experienced much of the same at the DCI events I've been to. Again, just my experience. I do hope you're correct though! Regarding the other coaches and lines you mentioned, I agree! There are other great coaches and styles out there. I just don't see them having the impact on the activity's vocabulary and presentation and pushing the envelope in the way Float/ScoJo have. JMO I will be at Finals again this year (a week from today!) and I look forward to enjoying all the groups, just like I did in 2019. :) Really, the point of my comment was to get clarification on why Roger plays drumset when the drumline is rehearsing. My last comment was gratuitous and unnecessary. I edited it out.
