The issue was they couldn't provide a full season schedule and some corps only wanted to do championships. It was deemed unfair for some corps to be able to get judges critique on a regular basis and some would not due to Covid concerns. There was a concern that if championships were judged, many corps would feel obligated to compete and DCI did not want that.

A nonscored season I think allows more creativity. You would probably get a Beatles themed show any other season, but I don’t know if it would have been as psychedelic if a score was on the line. They literally depict a piece of blotter in the first 3 minutes.

A quick question from a new DCI fan. I know they didn't score this year but watching videos from different corps I noticed a big difference in some corps like The Cadets who do a very physical show with lots of marching and a show like the Bluecoats here where they really for the most part played without moving around. Is there a scoring difference between the two?

Not sure how much different it is beyond just being more precise with the scoring, as I've only ever marched in a high school band, but for that they broke it down into captions then averaged out the scores. You have General Effect which breaks down into Music GE and Visual GE, basically how well do your music and visuals portray the theme of your show. Music Performance and Visual Performance, how cleanly are you playing/marching/dancing/etc. For high school each caption had two judges, with the exception of GE, which only had one judge for music and one judge for visual. Each judge had two sets of scores which they scored out of 100. (For example, Music Performance included Composition and Performance.) These two scores would be added together then divided by 10 to get the caption score, if a band got 98 for music comp and 97 for music perf they would have a 19.5 overall for that caption. These caption scores are then added to get the final score out of 100. For my state the highest a high school has ever scored was 93.625, which just happened this past season. My guess would be that DCI is a bit more in-depth than that, considering it's sorta like the NFL of marching band lol, either way, hope this helps clear things up a bit! :)
@marker848 Жыл бұрын
Playing on the move vs standing still isn’t scores differently. Playing on the move will help add to the content score but also you become less musically clean witch will subtract. You’ll normally see smaller/slower drill with more complex music and larger/faster drill with easier or no playing responsibilities. Really tho the score is how well the marching won playing works together to make an effect (GE). It’s a game of five and take where corps usually have a strengths they lean on like vis or music. Then you have the individual visual consistency and music cleanliness scores in the captions.

Idk man I love me some Blue, but as a diehard Beatles fan I’m disappointed. Thought they were sticking with psychedelic era Beatles due to the theming, but obviously they didn’t. Felt like they could have had better selections as some places and transitions were just plain awkward and as a listener it comes off as a jumbled mess. I’ll chalk this up to covid and budget and I’ll take it as it is as it was still performed beautifully.
@HavenMarches3 жыл бұрын
I like Lucy a lot as feels like a mix of downside up and The Bluecoats, though I just wish they had done something like what Phantom or Cadets did and re-performed Tilt or another one of their iconic previous shows. Since they're essentially using the same show concept as 2019 they might as well have done that, though I digress all of that is on the design team and these performers were truly spectacular.

@CJ-2223 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The Bluecoats have been known to innovate and revolutionize dci. They did it in 2014, and when they didn't get the success that they should have then, they chose an entirely different route in 2016 and finally got paid the respect they were due with a title. 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021 were all lovely shows, but they don't really seem very unique and each has become pretty forgettable in the context of the vast pool of historical dci shows. The Coats need to go back to the drawing board and pioneer a new revolutionary show again. They have great success when they do.
