They get a tempo. The center snare does a cool tap-off, and begins playing sixteenth notes, with what ever pattern he wants. Gradually, the snares will come in, and when they come in, they have a specific pattern to play. Once they play that pattern they play whatever the want, as long as it sounds like sixteenth notes. The lead tenor will begin, and then tenors come in and do whatever they want. Basses will go down the line. Check out "Bluecoats Drumline 2013 - Hacking", and you will see.
