Bluefin Trevally On First Cast In The Maldives! - Fishing in Thoddoo

I finally made it to the Maldives, a dream location for both regular tourists and fisherman. I first went to a small local island called Thoddoo, where you are allowed to fish from the beach. (On resort island you are not allowed to fish from the island or nearby the reef.)
I got lucky on the very first cast and caught my first ever Bluefin Trevally. Very stoked on that! I also hooked a strong fish that broke my hook, a couple of nice groupers and a beautiful triggerfish.

Fishing equipment: I am using a 2.2 meter travel telescope rod, a 2000 sized reel (kinda broken) and a 20 pound line. This session I used a small Weebass crankbait.

Yes it's an amazing island to fish, hope you had succes fishing here. I believe I was using some Weebass Rasbora lures (50mm/6,3g). Pretty good lures for light tackle 👍

I stayed in two different "hotels", but the one I stayed in many years ago isn't in business anymore. The last time I visited Thoddoo I stayed in Veli Thoddoo Inn (easy to find on booking.com). It is a budget place, but it has big rooms with good air-conditioning, a heavy breakfast and the guy who managed the place was very nice and gave me free snorkeling equipment during the week I stayed there. Perfect to get a full belly before going fishing and to cool down when you come back 🎣😉 There might be more luxury places available, but I travel on a budget 😉

Yes it is. I fished on the south-east part of the island. (In this area there are no tourists to be found in the water).

Hi JB, thanks for watching. I didn't need a license on the local islands. You are also allowed to eat the fish you catch, but I mostly do catch & release 😉 🎣

Yea this was my first fish ever in the Maldives and it was in the first cast. So I was very happy haha 😂. Maybe one day I will catch a huge one. One of the prettiest fish in the ocean.

Hi Brigitte, thanks for watching. No I only fished on Thoddoo and Maafushi. When you go beach fishing make sure you wear some surf shoes or water shoes to avoid scratching yourself against rocks and coral. I am not sure what else you want to know 😉. There are so many fish, it doesn't matter if you throw small or big lures, you will catch fish, trust me 😜

Just use a thin and light line (braid) and a rod with a flexible tip. You can also use a little heavier small lure if you can't reach the distance you want 😉 🎣

This is on Thoddoo. A beautiful local island with not many tourists yet. Fishing is amazing here. If you go to Maldives and you would like to go fishing from the beach, make sure you stay on a local island, not a resort island. You are not allowed to fish from a resort island (only option is fishing boat tour).

Be careful when handling trevally by the tail its very sharp, cut my hand once when handling a GT once. It sure as hell is painful

You are right, I found out some time later when I caught a smaller Trevally 😉. In this video I actually cut my finger open because of the triggerfish. Had no idea they had those gnarly hooks on the tail. Thanks for watching mate 🤘

I am not sure what you are asking. Are you asking if there are strict fishing rules in Maldives? Yes there are some important rules, because in the Maldives they put a lot of afford in protecting the reefs. That is why you are not allowed to fish on the beach on RESORT island and if you have a boat you need to keep a minimum distance from the reef. However, you are allowed to fish from the beach on LOCAL island (island where the local population lives). On island like Maafushi, Thoddoo, etc you can just fish from the beach without any license or guide. Just bring a rod and have fun. 🎣
