Bluefish Blitz in Boston Harbor

After a successful day of striped bass fishing, Capt. Tim Egenrieder of AnglerFish Guides and On The Water's Kevin Blinkoff return to Boston Harbor for an amazing bluefish blitz. With the inner harbor full of pogies hungry bluefish feast underneath the picturesque Boston skyline in a savage topwater feeding frenzy.

New to fishing. How is it that fishermen come to definitively know what the underlying baitfish are? Is it by reading reports, sight, or by actually first catching the baitfish? Obviously the baitfish dictates lure selection, but I am just curious how expert fishermen know what baitfish are underneath in the first place.

Hi Ryan - for this bait, the "pogies" or Atlantic menhaden, that Kevin's talking about, anglers are able to identify them by the way they school tightly on the surface, and flip their tails. They are also one of the most historically abundant baitfish in the area in the summertime. So, first, by knowing which baitfish you are likely to encounter--in Boston Harbor, it would be mackerel, menhaden (either adults or juveniles, called "peanut bunker"), river herring, or sea herring, and then by knowing the habits and look of those baitfish. Also, recent reports are helpful as well. In this case, Kevin was fishing with Captain Tim Egenrieder, who is almost every day, and has a finger to the pulse of what baitfish and gamefish are around his home waters.
