You said you bought you a fillet knife. Get yourself a small cooler and put ice in it before you go to the lake/water. So when you catch fish. Put them in the cooler with the ice. That way they will stay cool/cold til you get back home. And when you get ready to fillet them. It’ll be easier. I don’t put my fish on a string and put them back in the water. I did that before and a turtle ate have if my fish, or a snake will try to eat them. That’s why I take a small cooler with ice in it.

My grandmother taught me at a very young age to bream fish and when I got older, I spent a lot of time on the Gulf Coast saltwater fishing on my father's 24 ft. bay boat. Good evening J-Lady Checking on your fishing technique. I have a suggestion add a small split shot weight about 8 inches from the hook. And where are you fishing at, I'm in south carolina. If you take a night crawler and put the worm on, just hook it only time on the end with the hook about 1 inch and let hang and wiggle with a float around 3 feet from the weight and hold on that's the way you catch shellcrackers which is a little bigger than blue gills but good to eat. To me a lady fishing it reminds me of my wife fishing and smiling for the first fish she caught Continue lady

*Are you new to fishing? I only ask because I remember using that kind of pole as a kid - and then moving up to the usual bail type where you flip it prior to release. That may be better for you in the long term, especially dealing with bigger fish, but you should be fine if that's how you want to move.* *If you want to catch catfish - I have a few bait recipes for channel and all other species of cat.* *The Smaller blue gills are GREAT for catching bigger fish. Either using them whole and tossing them out a distance, or as cut bait. I'm sure you know how to hook them once you eventually reach that stage of fishing. But you'll definitely need a better fishing pole setup.* *You should look at any local Dams or estuaries for different types of predator fish. Not sure where you're based, but the saltwater fishing from the shore is another great way to try fishing.*

The more you fillet. The better you get!! And filleted fish is better than frying them with the bones, because you have to fight the bones when your eating the fish with the bones and the fillets, you can eat them like chicken nuggets, and don’t have to worry about no bones.
