That's a bit harsh, racing was struggling for viewers at channel 4. ITV have totally transformed it, and got the viewing figures way up.

A horse who could win a hennessy around 3m 2f of newbury and 3m round Sandown but didnt get 3m 2F of the cheltenham gold cup.. Used to scratch my head for hours on that....

He always carried a load of condition, so I think he always better over shorter. I reckon 2 1/2 miles was his optimum. But he was about 30 lbs well-in here. Looking at his overall record, excluding falls, he was 13/18 over around 3 miles, 4/5 over 2 1/2 plus champion chase.

The Cheltenham hill caught him out ,Sandowns king george race uphill finish on soft ground he was all out very tired .

Tony Dobbin rode him here, but owner John Hales later put Richard Dunwoody on him. Bad choice in my view. I don't think it ever worked. Brian Harding then took the ride for his 2 mile Champion Chase success. I personally felt Dunwoody's style did not suit him.

Richard Dunwoody rode One Man brilliantly, he won 6 races from 11 rides on him & when he didn't win he wasn't to blame in any way.
