I missed some of the renovation/maintenance content! Good to see this style of video again. Doing a "Maintenance schedule/here's what I check on everyday/once a week" style video might be kinda cool! There's so much to consider with boats!

Well done, you both complement each other so well it's hard to say who is in charge you the job. May the sea spirits be kind to "Blue Moon" and her awesome crew.

If you can keep the brass one going it will last much longer than the plastic version. As other comments have mentioned, its always worth lubricating rubber seals with vaseline, or better still silicone grease (a tube will last years and is so useful around the boat). Also think about greasing the threads on the cap with the same, it should make removal next time easier 😀

We have the same GROCO vents on our generator and wing engine. Our was causing the generator to shutoff due to exhaust temperature (we think). Opened up the vent and found the rubber was allowing a bit of Backflow. I highly recommend you replace the rubber flapper. $100 each but it needs to be replaced I would say every year. Also the top of your cap should have a fitting on it to attach a 1/2” hose to allow the excess water to flow down to the bilge and not into your cabinet.

It appears that the rubber has gone hard and lost its sealing capabilities. I would try to locate a new one. Kudos to catching that and looking into it.

I'm not in the same boat, but I'm in a very similar boat. Mine is a C-25. Do good, be safe.

Not gunk stopping it from opening, it was a bit of gunk stopping it from staying closed. Very nice looking piece of kit; but wow, expensive too!

Great Video but do Put anti-seize compound on those threads, use it on all threads except potable drinking water systems, also rubber has a shelf life depending on it chemical composition and exposure to elements. there is a chance the rubber is beginning or in early stages of crystallization, if in doubt, order a new on and replace to be safe. the vinegar is a good method or ketchup will work in emergencies, good idea to also keep several sizes of brass wire brushes on board for those types of projects.

I would suspect that the rubber has hardened. Would have the spare part on order.

If you have to replace the whole valve I would put a new brass one back on that’s the proper valve for there not plastic

It is always a moment of anxiety when you two are repairing something. I know resources are tight and "hiring out "repairs is ghastly in terms of cost. Congratulations on navigating another potential logistics problem.

Rubber gets stiff over time. I think you need a new valve.

Vinegar not so good for rubber. Lubricate rubber with Vaseline.. I think that’s the way it works… problem rubber is it hardens and cracks.
