Start with a plan or you'll get lost. Lift, dip, lead. It's a simple mantra that will help you build a good platform for your tight-line nymphing.

Fantastic, Joe! You do a great job of getting past the complications and the gear fetish to.... fishing! Truly helpful. You and the folks at Red’s rock; I feel really fortunate to live near enough to day fish the canyon, and never without a stop at - or a shuttle from - you guys. Thanks for making it better, and more fun, for the rest of us!

I'm just starting to euro nymph because after flyfishing for 31 years learning something new is truly invigorating! Thanks for sharing this video, it's a great way to learn the basic drift technique.

Joe (sorry I called you Red in a previous comment ;-) As I said before I can't wait to get up to Montana in a few weeks and Euro nymph the Madison! You should make another video where you have a "fish off" between a classic indicator two-fly rig and a Euro rig in similar stretches of water so that you're not fishing one after the other in the same run. I feel like what I've learned from you lately the Euro rig would shine in a duel, but it would be nice to have some evidence. Thanks for all the great stuff you're putting online and don't feel bad when you get outfished by your kids! John Y. Lakewood, CO

The type of water you fish is usually faster too, that’s a big thing people that pick up Euronymphing overlook at first. Moving water is important.

I've been watching a lot of your videos on euro style, thank you for making them. Closing in on a dedicated euro rig. Liking the mentality of the 2wt sage esn, how big of trout are you comfortable with on that light of a rod? Maybe a moot point, I've just never gone that low. Majority of what I will catch will be under 20". Very much the possibility of larger.
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop 3 жыл бұрын
Oh you may want a #3 if there is great possibility of trout that large. 20" on the tape is almost double the weight of a 17" trout. I've had quite a few ESN rods and the Sage product is the finest I've used.

Hello Joe, thank you for your great ESN videos. One question or request, can you make an ESN video about how to fish with structure, like under trees, logs etc? Thx
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a good idea. Rocks are great, but trout love a roof over their heads don't they?

Is the choice of a #2 weight over a #3 based on feel preference, size , flow of the river, size of the expected fish or something else? Thanks, always enjoy your tips!
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop 3 жыл бұрын
For me its the touchy feely stuff, like tapping bottom and feeling subtle strikes. I just tend to hook and catch more trout when I am using the lightest possible rod. The downsides are durability, versatility (like the lack power), and overall distance potential for taking on jobs like dry dropper setups.

A #3 will land larger fish better and fish bigger rivers better.

Im a newbie to Euro Nymph fishing. Is the fly rod sensitive enough to feel the bottom? Or you just have a feel for it?
@zigab.2883
@zigab.2883 3 жыл бұрын
You should feel the bottom with 3wt rod and with heavy enough flies
@irideaduck939
@irideaduck939 3 жыл бұрын
@@zigab.2883 trout are not bottom feeders, you don't need to be contacting the bottom on every cast. If you're on the bottom your fly will be below them.

Reminds me of Czech nymphing. What is the difference?

Same. I am sure a Czech would argue otherwise but I believe the methods are described interchangeably.

Is the sage rod a lot better than the echo shadow x?just getting into the euro fishing

I believe the Echo Shadow X has 80% the touch of the Sage, but lacks the quality finish of the Sage ESN.

I own both. You will be happy with either. The ESN (especially in a 2 Weight), though, will become one of your favorite rods.

How long you let go fly line from the top of the rod?
@redsflyshop

About 12" of fly line out the rod tip with a 12' leader is pretty average for me. I think that answers your question.

What do you mean by “find the tippet”?
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, that means lifting your sighter out of the water until you can see where it ends and the tippet begins, at that point, you can begin to "Dip" and measure your way to the bottom.
