We don't have a bass in church. And I've always wondered if I could just play the bottom four strings and get away with it?

You could… but it won't sound as full and powerful as a bass would. It will also depend if it’s a full band with drums, etc or if it’s something smaller like 2 guitars and vocals, etc.
