I was there. Amazing Very Important band , highly overlooked. This band was one of the most important bands in the beginning of rock history.

I grew up listening to these guys since I was 12 years old. I still enjoy listening to their music. They left a fine body of work.

Danny Kalb & Steven Katz both came up during the late 50’s in the folk music era. They both studied guitar with Dave Van Ronk and Reverend Gary Davis. Danny joined Van Ronk's Ragtime Jug Stompers in 1963. He performed with Bob Dylan on a WBAI-FM concert broadcast in 1961. Finally in 1965, Kalb formed the Blues Project with Steve Katz, Andy Kulberg, Roy Blumenfeld and Tommy Flanders. Flanders later left the band and was replaced by Al Kooper. In 1970, Kulberg & Blumenfeld left the group to form SeaTrain with bluegrass legend Peter Rowan. These local upstate NY boys, who knew their musical genre’ and could simply rock the livin shit out of ANY audience.

I still don't understand why Steve Katz was in this group. It seems his major contributions were musical fluff like "Turtle Dove." He was into Stephen Bishop-type chick ballads, not blues. One other thing: I have many Blues Project albums, but the vocals scream "young white kids." They may have developed a good feel for the blues, but no one can fake singing them. Gotta pay your dues. Like the black blues masters said "you can learn to play it like us, but you can't sing it like us." That said, I always thought it was a cool band. I bought many subsequent Al Kooper albums like "Easy Does It" and "I Stand Alone."

Hey Dude, so you are familiar with Al's Blood Sweat And Tears. His album, the first one was absolutely big band soulful and a bluesy. Cannot take that away from him.

@@bloozswami "Child is Father to the Man" is a masterpiece. I'm one of those guys who regretted the arrival of David Clayton Thomas, who was more of a lounge singer type. Al did some of the arrangements on BS&T 2, but after that the band went in the money-making direction. I bought #3 but that was it - played it 2 or 3 times before giving up. Kept buying Al though: "Easy Does it," "I Stand Alone," "New York City (You're a Woman)," "Act Like Nothing's Wrong." Hell of a career.

NY Jews blues, but they were the originals. Read Al Kooper's auto bio recently, so I understand. By chance he scammed his way into the Dylan Highway 61 sessions, two more great Jewish icons, Bloomfield and Dylan, the greatest of them all. Blue project Projections remains a great album and stands the test of time. Not many do.
