Insights and knowledge shared with facility and modesty- one needs to remind oneself that here is an Air Mshl who has been C-in-C of two operational commands. The sober assessment of the current capability of the Tejas( a replacement for the MiG 21 series), and of the way forward for the Mk II or the AMCA necessarily being anchored to a developed engine hold the promise that we will be mature in managing the future projects . Heartening to listen to this podcast.

Lovely to listen to Air Marshal Nambiar. Agreed with most of his points except a couple on the Tejas. After all it was designed as a MiG-21 replacement & more than meets that requirement. Also, you didn’t ask him why the Air Force seems to not want to even mention the Tejas Mk2 in its orbat plans. They talk of the 83 Mk1A order & then directly talk about supporting the AMCA. But the AMCA will be a bridge too far if the Tejas Mk2 doesn’t work out.

Nambi sir's journey is just so thrilling... since i am beyond my age of joining IAF as Fighter Pilot. I hope in my next life i be able to fly AMCA or its other advance variant instead of working in corporate sector & minting money without any higher purpose.. now success of Tejas MK2 is really important as it would be our more than match of Mirage2000 in 30's or beyond. 73 MK1a is good step for dwindling fleet/head start & likely upcoming 100 more is also good but initial talked of 201 Tejas Mk2 or 12 squadrons as was envisaged in BS Dhanoa's or Nambiar sir's time should be fructified also with GE's imminent tie up for engine making in India will also increase indigenous cost by value for Tejas MK2 which goes in favor of further more number than 200 but undertone of only 6 squadron would be one glass of water in lake..

@@BlueSkiesPodcast I do also have memories of the time at Lohegaon AFS that A/M Nambiar speaks about. I distinctly remember the Venerable Vampires, Lumbering Liberators and Sleek Super-Constellations taking off from there and make a slow climbing turn over our school playground. Even Doughty Dakotas were seen sometimes. The distinctive sound of the engines stand out in one's memory even today. Especially the roar of the Pratt & Whitney Radial engines. Anyone who loves music, would classify them as music, at least I do! 😊

As relates to EW suite, the Mk1A is going to address that with the EW pod. Armament wise it will match & exceed the Mirage-2000I in BVR with the i-Derby ER, Astra Mk1 & ASRAAM. Not to mention Python V. Radar wise, AESA radar will make it more potent than Mirage-2000I & MiG-29UPG. Anyway there is a big opportunity to design the dream single engine fighter for the IAF & that is the Tejas Mk2 MWF. Hope the IAF takes it up in the right way and steers the program to its desired destination with the right set of capabilities.

A very nice podcast. Would have liked if AM Nambiar would have explained the meaning of "fixed gains"
@raghunathnambiar10252 жыл бұрын
SIMPLE EXPLANATION: In a Fly by Wire system the Gains are the amplification or attenuation which is applied to the input signal to achieve the desired aircraft response. The Gains are computed based on the Altitude and Mach No, Centre of Gravity and Configuration. The Altitude and Mach No are obtained from the air data system. In a new aircraft, flying for the first time, or due to air data failure conditions, the air data system could be in error, thus leading to erroneous Gain Computations. To cater for this a fixed set of Gains are used and these are termed Fixed Gains. Normally two sets of fixed gains are used. One to caters for the U/C up phase of flight, and the other for the U/C down landing phase. Using fixed Gains results in the flight characteristics being not as responsive as desired and degraded handling qualities. So, Pilots are directed to stay strictly within the Fixed Gain Envelope and only carry out Gentle Rolls to recover as soon as possible.

Hi Sir, request you to please ask Air Marshal Nambiar questions on the future roadmap of IAF. He was a part of the decision making establishment, so would love to hear it from the horse's mouth! Thanks very much!

Will try to get him again, and pose this question

While I do also heartily second the request above, I feel that one should also defer to the desire of the esteemed guest/s concerned The primary objective (IMHO) is to commemorate the service of the individual/s concerned, as well as share their reminiscences; some of which are extremely gripping! Anything beyond that while desirable, may be considered optional. Regards.

@@BlueSkiesPodcast for this subject; A/M Harish Masand is likely to be an excellent resource-peron; among many others.... However, you are best placed to take a call on that. Maybe you could consider multiple inputs also (with the much bigger load of editing involved :-) )....that would add to the 'Excitement Quotient'!!

I have read reports by high ranking IAF pilots praising the Tejas vs the Mirage. Mr Nambiar was very complementary of he foreign Mirage but much less enthusiastic about the Tejas. This is typical IAF behaviour. They still hanker for foreign fighters when there is no money for it. Future wars cannot be won by using foreign maal. LCA Mk2 and AMCA are the way to go.

Guests go through the podcast and ensure nothing that isn't easily available in the public domain is mentioned. Yes, we're very careful about this.
