While playing by yourself, the 2021 sounds more pleasing with less high end, but in a band setting with drums, cymbals, another guitar player, etc - the punchy high end helps cut through the mix. I prefer my 2020 model - I would like more high end overall and if it becomes too much, just turn the tone knob; that’s why it’s there :)

I think I prefer the new one, the mellowness doesn’t fight with the overdrive pedals or amp as the more powerful pickups like to. also allows u to dig in a bit more which is super bouncy fun with that kind of amp and sound

Useful info, and nice playing! I don't know if you recorded this through a pro mic or something, but the way it lets us really hear the (absolutely beautiful) tone is crazy. Here’s what I can say having owned both rosewood silver sky’s. In comparison to the 2018 original run the 2021 version has : - a fatter neck especially around feet 1 to 5. As the spec says more meat at the back of the guitar. Higher up in the neck you won’t too much of a difference - Satin neck - Larger frets - Lower output and to my ears it sounds nicer I wouldn’t call my 2021 frost. The white is almost like a pale white leaning towards a fender Olympic white in comparison to the original run. -

I think the satin one definitely sounds better, and I'm thinking of buying one. I have smaller hands, and I loved the way the older neck felt. How much of a difference is the new neck compared to the old? Is it like Les Paul thick? Also, you're an amazing player, you have such a relaxed approach to playing, your tone sounds great, and you just sound like a natural! Edit: Would you PLEK it? Or do you think that would take the magic out of it?

Don’t really get why it’s that important apart from the low maintenance. I’ve had mine for 3 years and I play heavily handed every day sometimes for hours and still plenty of fret left. Not to mention the new silver sky’s have bigger frets. The stainless steel also changed the tone.

I'm surprised the old one on the middle and bridge actually sounds just as mellow, though it's always hard to get the recording to relay what you're hearing in the room. The difference seems larger on the neck and neck+middle pickups, at the least, though that's counter-intuitive since I know they use the same pickup on all three... hmm. Obviously they both sound great. The real question is, do you think playing the old one with -1 volume and -1 tone is similar enough to any warmth the new ones give? I have this same debate with myself on my maple vs my rosewood Silver Sky (checkout the comparison vid). Comparing tones between the two of those is similar to this, yet the punchier one also stays cleaner, in that case. My rosewood one gets dirtier quicker, but maybe the pickups on it are higher output as well (the maple is newer). Thanks a lot for the video btw. Want to part with any of those cabs? ;)

Question: would you rather have a Fender Custom Shop than a mass produced PRS just because it says John Mayer? Second hand, you can find a custom shop at the same price as a new PRS that doesn't come with a case.

The wood the custom shop uses, is not the wood they use for the mass produced Fenders, the finish is nitro, the pickups are hand-wound, the necks are sanded by hand, necks and bodies are matched according to their acoustic resonance, they are built in series with a limited number. The bodies are matched. Necks are quartersawn, or flamed wood, or birds-eye wood, or roasted or a combination. The finish can be new, NOS/closet, lightly reliced, heavy reliced (relicing is done by hand and the process is kept secret). They all come with a factory road map, so you can see the full assembly (with the names of the people who worked on it) and all specs. The Custom Shop is a seperate part of Fender and consists out of teams, who are trained and are under the supervision of a masterbuilder. The PRS Silver Sky is produced like a Fender American Strat is produced. The body can exist out of 4 different pieces. The necks are all the same. The pickups are not hand-wound and are all the same. The finish is just poly. They are not limited at all. You don't have to believe me, you can simply e-mail Fender Custom Shop. I own 3 of them. One of my best friends is a custom shop dealer.

Have you put a meter on the pickups , checked the height just to be certain. I couldn't imagine the pickups being lower output than the ones I have. I like the old one better to my ear.
