I have a 6 month old Bluetick Coonhound. He is already 60pounds. He is very sweet and we were able to train him not to bark. Great dogs over all!

They are excellent hunting dogs for raccoons. I loved my Bluetick Coonhound.

Hunting hounds have a sweet silliness unmatched by any other breed. However, if the dog comes from actively hunted lines, then the hound may never adapt to cats.....they see them as game and the same w other small dogs. I speak from personal experience here. You get them enough exercise (where they can really stretch put and run) and they are GREAT dogs. They can also make pretty good watch dogs.

I am confident that my dog is mostly some kind of Coonhound, but I don't know what other breeds she could be. She has double dew claws on both of her back feet, which is a common trait for Great Pyrenees, but my dog is mostly brown and like darker brown almost black, with barely just a tiny stripe of white down her chest and barely on the tips of her paws. She weighs about 65 pounds and is almost five years old. She looks like a hound for sure, and sounds like one. I never thought I could get so attached to a dog.

Richie, I got a coonhound through pet adoption a few months back; he was about 4 months at the time. I did not know he was a hound at first. Then I took him to the vet and she said he was a coonhound. The dog trainer said the same. I did some research and asked some people and I am pretty certain he is a Treeing Walker coonhound. My dog has the double dew claws on the back feet as well, and the trainer said he has some Great Pyrenees in his lineage. I don't think so however. I do believe he is a Walker hound cur, but I am not sure what other breed other than hound.

I have a coonhound mix that exhibits Tree Walker behavior. My coonhound also has the dewclaws and a trainer thought that he might be mixed with Great Pyrenees. I don't think so, however.

@@johngranger6398 I totally forgot about making this comment, but it's really funny to see now because I did get my dog's DNA tested a while ago, and here were the results: 35.0% Bluetick Coonhound, 18.8% Labrador Retriever, 15.0% Great Pyrenees, 10.1% Australian Cattle Dog, 5.9% Boxer, 5.6% Chow Chow, and 9.6% "Supermutt". So I was right about my dog being mostly Bluetick Coonhound and she has a decent amount of Great Pyrenees too! I used the Embark DNA test, by the way. I am SO glad that I did!

How can "Exercise Needs" be rated as a 3 in such an active dog? I don´t get that.
@dogbreeds144 жыл бұрын
Hi. Because it's from the owner's point of view. Such an active dog needs a lot of exercise, and this can be hard for some people who don't like to exercise as much as their dog :-)
@johngranger63984 жыл бұрын
Coonhounds need a lot of vigorous exercise. I walk/jog with mine three or four times a day beginning at 0500 or so. They do sleep a lot however. Coonhounds are not house dogs; they need the space and freedom to run and work.

One thing to keep in mind about hounds is that they are PREDATORS! As with any hunting dog, they are bred to smell. They can only be trained to a point but what a lot of people don't realize is that some of their habits that humans instinctively want to curb are actually good traits for a hunting dog. They really are best suited to rural living but are very affectionate cuddlers as well. Mine loves to burrow his head into me and has no problem when I sometimes use him as a pillow. He frequently returns the favor. Love him to death, but I live an active life. He is very playful, but when not playing, he's a couch potato. Igive him a 7 of ten for normal dog owners, for hunters, hes a solid 10, but they require patience. and sometimes, a solid nudge in the butt. Stubborn. To clarify, I dont and would NEVER kick my dog, but a nudge with my foot is sometimes the only way to get his attention. They tend to have a one track mind

Do they really have above average odor anyone?
@davidwallner2124 жыл бұрын
Mine liked to lay in the sun and sweat. I had to get up close to smell him. The escape and run the neighborhood hunting was in my view his worst trait
@johngranger63984 жыл бұрын
Yes. They have a musty odor. You'll get used to it. They are escape artists and will roam around the neighborhood chasing other dogs and small animals. Mine can scale fences. But, they have a good memory and will eventually return home. Sometimes, my coonhound would slip his leash and take off like a rocket. I just let him run around the conservation area and he runs up to about a kilometer away and stops and turns around to look for me. Then, he returns.
