I discovered this song in the most unorthodox way. It was 2002, I was 10 years old, and one morning in a school assembly our headmaster put an image up on one of those old overhead projectors. The image was of a painting by Salvador Dali 'The persistence of memory' (the melting clocks painting). He challenged us all to find a piece of music at home that we believe suits the image, and to bring in our chosen piece on CD. The winning CD would be played in assembly at the end of the week with the image displayed. I don't even know why I was so determined to find the perfect match, but sure enough I went home with a plan on sitting there for hours if I had to listening through my dad's CD's. Blur 13 just happened to be sat at the top of the pile, took me less than 5 minutes to come across this song and I immediately knew the search was already over, very first moment I heard that almost metronome sounding opening. My selection ultimately beat out fierce competition from S Club 7 and the Vengaboys and I never felt so chuffed having it played on the Friday morning, until I had to get up and explain to the entire school why I chose it. I have no idea what I said

This album is a masterpiece. Damon’s character studies of the Britpop era were fun and clever and all, but his lyricism throughout this record is truly amazing. As are his and Graham’s sound direction. This is basically the 97 album but with lyricism and sound that goes the full mile and then some. I have no doubt this must have been personal hell for them, Graham battling the bottle and Damon losing his love and trying to get off heroin, but it didn’t half sound amazing. This entire album is the sound of someone battling their demons and is truly stunning.

I love this whole album, so different to anything around at the time. Blur are truly amazing artists when it comes to audio experimentation. They and Radiohead were streets ahead of so many (in a particularly great musical era to add) It's between this and Caramel on this album, I can never decide which I love more, although I do like the sudden change in 'feel' of this song, like it suddenly gets angry in the last 60 seconds.

The answer is no. Oasis have 0 experimentation. They do what they do, which is good, straight forward rock and roll, but nothing like blur. Like Graham said, blur have so many roads, but most people only know the straight road.

The only thing I can think of is Teotihuacan by Noel Gallagher. It was on the soundtrack for the first X-Files film back in 1998. It’s a great song and quite experimental, but nowhere near anything that Blur was doing. Still worth a listen if you’re interested.

If only blur just continue exploring this side of their musical creativity then maybe they would be huge outside UK like Radiohead or Muse but downside is that we would never have Gorillaz
@robsdianten12 жыл бұрын
Maybe yes, maybe no. Gorillaz was already on Damon's head when 13 came out. Maybe, just maybe if Graham hadn't had alcohol problems and his creativeness still connected with Damon's: we would have had Blur for the entire 00's. Sadly, both already were in quite different creative lines by the end of the 90s.

2:18 that guitar though! This songs progressive and dark vibe stands out to me. The use of noises and multiple instruments in this makes it a truly unforgettable experience. Despite Blur mostly doing cheesy Brit-pop like Advert, Parklife and I Know, this is a unimaginable change to other songs they have produced. Makes 13 Blur's best album. This song didn't stick out to me at first but as I've listened to it again, I've really grown on it. The ending is beautiful providing a melancholy, relaxing vibe. The way it smoothly transitions into Mellow Song, is impressive really. 10/10

@@deathkampdrone @Alex Parker you are both right. I don't think this album would have sounded like it does if Stephen Street had been the producer. He did a great job with the self-titled album but the band did well bringing someone new as the producer. I also think William Orbit came in at the exact point where the band was on its peak of creativity which ironically came from the deep pain of each members. Heaven knows how much I wish they could record with William Orbit again but honestly I don't see it happening again.
