Alex is an excellent musician. His basslines were always really inventive and catchy at the same tiem.

people have been sleeping on Alex for all these years I was a Blur fan (since 2006ish)... just recently (like 3 years ago) people started to notice his bass lines. I was so intrigued by his work but people would rarely cite him and it was always Graham is a wizard and Damon is a genious... hear me out, the same thing will happen with Dave in some years I guess.

incredible performance of an incredible and criminally underrated piece of music. to think i got this album when i was 7 and always thought this was just a throwaway album track until i rediscovered it as a young adult. looking back now, blur's music was always so much more artistic and incredible than the Britpop tag implied. another album that suffered from the same tag was Six by Mansun, another incredible piece of art. but back to the topic, this is incredible. oasis could never write anything with this much intelligence and nuance. blur could be just as dark as radiohead while remaining easier on the ear than radiohead ever were. a genuine musical force in their heyday. damon albarn and graham coxon's musical styles complemented each other to absolute perfection, and alex james' basslines were world class. god i miss when good music like this dominated the charts.

You've pretty much described my experience with this track. I always used to skip past He Thought of Cars, dismissing it as a filler track when I was younger - listening again as an adult, it is now by far my favourite from this album and one of my favourite Blur tracks altogether. It's like unearthing a gem. Alex's bassline is absolutely sublime, Damon's vocal, Graham and Dave - they've all set a beautiful, dark tone for this one that just stands out on TGE as something very special.

i'm tearing up reading this and thinking about everything you said. i couldn't have said it better myself. this band means a lot to me and i love to find this kind of hidden gems under their videos, just people opening their hearts to them.

i knew of blur, mostly their singles. Damon Alborn had released a few Gorillaz albums by time i left high school. I picked up Alex James autobiography a fortnight ago, disappointed he didn’t go more into making of the music. But regardless i went through their back catalogue, and i agree, this is one of their finest pieces of work.

This has always been one of my favorite Blur song. It's so amazing. It's as dark as Radiohead, but still lighter than Radiohead in a way. It's incredible, and it just blows me away listening to it.

Yeah it’s sad bc Thom has complimented Blur a lot in the past-he went as far as saying he wished he’d written Girls & Boys-but then Damon made some comments & they didn’t seem to get on well ☹️ Jonny & Graham are friends though

That song is IMHO one of their best (and one of the best of the 90s). Like all great bands, Blur had many gems "hidden" as album tracks, and this one is amazing. The chord progression, the bass line, Damon's vocal delivery, Graham's guitar effects. Listening to it brings me right back to 1995.
