Bluthner uprights of this period have a unique action system where the dampers are attached to the piano frame, so when the rest of the action is removed, they remain in place for easy regulating.

Marcus, thank you for bringing this marvel to light here. There's something about old Blüthners that can be sensed only by talking to them through their keys and listening to what they say in response. I wholly agree that it sounds warmer, if not richer, that the Bechstein you compared it with. (Truth be told, I'm biased toward Blüthners, as the first concert grand I had even laid my fingers on was a pre-1910 patent action Blüthner; and vivid childhood impressions tend to persist.)

I don't think I can stomach the Bluthner sound. I was searching for the words to describe it and you pretty much nailed it: "mellow" and "bright when you need it" and also "richer" than the Bechstein. I think it's that combination of brightness and mellowness that create an attention grabbing, overly sweet, overly rich sound that irritates me. I think,overall, Bechsteins have my favourite sound.
