Come take a short tour of a struggling town named Blythe, located in California.
The town is hanging on but there are signs all over showing a much more lively past.

@@EminenceFrontX5, dude I lived in Blythe for 7 yrs & left in 2008. It looks WAY worse from when I was there. The ocean breeze is way better than the 115 degree heat, lol. Even if the Sizzler was open & the city of Blight (lol) got 3-4 more businesses like Van Dyke says it wouldn't keep the town from going under. Plus Chuckawalla Prison is closing so there goes those jobs. It's inevitable Blythe shall perish. No need to return, just my opinion.

I grew up in Blythe from kindergarden thru junior high my parents moved back east to Virginia before I attended High School. It was 50 yrs before I ever got back to visit they say you cant go home again it sure has changed since my dqys but it was a great place to grow up back in the 60s. I come back now and again whenever I can I still have cousins who live there. I love the desert.

At the 7:13 mark you come across a building where you say it might have been a Mexican restaurant...it was actually an original style A&W it's on the corner of Acacia and Hobson...My Great Grandma and Grandpa Gilliam lived halfway down on Acacia...and my brother and I used to walk down and get ice cream or root beer floats in the mid 70s...my whole family on both sides was born is Blythe...My Grandfather Vertrees was the ShopTeacher and track coach at Palo Verde High school...My Great Grandma Gilliam also worked for that high school....it's so sad what has happened to our little desert oasis....my Great Grandad was also one of the first to survey the area and build the canals systems for irrigation...The Colorado River was our playground.

Lived in Blythe for a good while as a kid from 1994 to late 1999, moved from San Diego to Blythe late 1994 and moved back in 1999 till 2002 moved to Texas, my stepdad had jobs in the cities as a radiology tech X-Ray Tech moved as jobs offered more pay plus as way to experience living in different area.Blythe back then as I remember was a more lively town down town was busy like that gift shop in video the stores nearby all where open and the parking lots had at least 20 cars parked, laundromat always busy and the larger stores business all busy it's sad to hear that the town might end up as another sleeper town AKA still exits but hardly anything worth stay for except to drive around to have a look then move on.

Seems like an Active Ghost Town surviving among the Living who have no intention on going anywhere as Blythe is home and always shall be. Some of the architect is vintage! The motel sign comes to mind and the roofs of that drive thru/ drive in style eatery with it's back corner a bit ravaged from a truck turning left a bit sharply and fast too. So many shuttered business's in town that I'm suspecting most who do live there and work do so with a commute to another city. Loved The Music!!! Cheers From Ohio To The Eminence Front Universe!

Another town killed by the interstate. Halfway between Palm Springs / Phoenix, old highway 60 went right through the center of town. After three or so hours of fighting two-lane blacktop, a rest was in order. But now, with high speed freeway, why stop in Hicksville when megalopolis is just down the road. Dad had river-front property back in the early 60's, and, between the highway 60 Phoenix to Los Angeles traffic coming down "Main Street" and all the family-runned farms, Blythe was a booming town. Now that both are gone, so is the town.

Partially, but farmers selling their water rights had a tremendous impact. But the biggest reason Blythe is in terrible shape is because it's been mismanaged for decades. There are absolutely ZERO incentives to move here. A lot of money has been squandered and wasted on pet projects and little to none invested in infrastructure. The only real wear my pickup sees is driving around the terribly rough roads here. I don't predict any improvements here, it's beyond that. It's only going to get worse.

Two weeks after premiered on July 14, 1969, police acting on a phone tip raided the Solar Lodge’s compound near Blythe, California and found a six-year-old boy locked outdoors in a 6’x6’ wooden crate in the sweltering desert heat. The young boy, whose father was a Los Angeles County probation officer (as was Michelle Phillip’s father, by the way), had been chained to a steel plate for nearly two months in temperatures reaching as high as 117° F. According to an FBI report, the box also contained a can “partially filled with human waste and swarming with flies … The stench was nauseating.” Before being put in the box, the child had been burned with matches and beaten with bamboo poles by cult members. The leader of the cult, Georgina Brayton, had reportedly told cult members that “when it was convenient, she was going to give [the boy] LSD and set fire to the structure in which he was chained and give him just enough chain to get out of reach of the fire.” Killing the child had also been discussed (and apparently condoned by the boy’s mind-fucked mother).
