A friend and I took a death march weekend trip to the Black Mesa and Lake Powell for their last weekend of operations. I was up at 0330 that Thursday morning, worked till Noon, met my friend at Midway airport, flew to Albuquerque, then we took turns driving 6.5 hours through the desert to Page, AZ. After about a 2 hour nap, it was time to start the chase. I don't think I have ever been that tired in my life.
I was mostly focusing on pictures, and I didn't have room to bring a tripod along on the plane, so this video is shot with my Galaxy and I used a cattle guard as a tripod. Turned out pretty good. I've also included my only drone footage, which does a better job showing the unique and beautiful Navajo land this railroad ran through.
The mine was already shut down at this point and the railroad was moving the remaining stockpiled coal to the plant, which will close once they burn through their stockpile. The Navajo own the railroad, and rumor has it they'll leave the tracks in for the possibility of starting a tourist operation in the future.
It was a solemn time, we spoke to several employees who were losing their jobs in this region that doesn't have many places to work. It's very sad this unique railroad is dead. I enjoyed both my trips to this railroad. The Navajo people were very nice, and their land is beautiful.
