BMC URS (Unrestricted) First Ride Review [2020 Gravel Bike]

Two Wheel Cruise

5 жыл бұрын

Today we'll be taking a first look at BMC Switzerland's new 2020 gravel bike, the BMC Unrestricted 01 One (URS for short).
BMC has built some all-rounder bikes like the roadmachine, roadmachine X, and granfondo, but this is their first "pure" gravel bike. Some technology like the micro travel technology system has been brought over from their mountain bike platform for some extra comfort and traction. Also, tires are supported up to a width of 45mm for an even smoother ride, though it comes stock with 42mm WTB resolute tires.
The entire Unrestricted line is set up as 1x, and the URS 01 One comes built with Sram RED AXS (38t).
This was my first time riding a gravel bike and this bike handled like a champion. Some of the gravel sections were very rough, but this thing rolled over them with ease and I still felt very fast on my accelerations (both off pavement and on).

First I thought you were riding in Germany - the environment is incredibly similar. We have the same kind of gravel roads over here and I actually ride the exact same tires on my Trek Checkpoint SL which is also (sort of) suspended in the back and I'm having pretty much the same experience when riding over rough Gravelroads - it just flies over it and you barely notice the rough surface. I also have Redshift Suspension stem, though, so I'm (kinda) fully suspended in that thing. Other than that - very similar to my setup so this video was quite interesting to me.

@TwoWheelCruise 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think I'd consider a new road that doesn't go up to 32 anymore.. 28 would be a bare minimum. Depends on the type of riding you do, but in some situations the gravel bike is more favorable than a mtb. My local CX series also bans mountain bikes for cat 2 and up, which is annoying :/

I love the brown tan walls on the wheels. I also like gravel bikes that I have three! :D I have a Giant Tough road SLR GX1 2019 running Tiagra groupset with Hydraulic Disc Brakes and 40mm tubeless tires; I also have a custom-built Planet-X London Road also with Tiagra groupset with Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes and plan on converting my rims to tubeless with gorilla tape and 37mm Panaracer tubeless-ready tires. My last gravel bike is a Giant XTC hardtail MTB with Alivio groupset and Avid BB5 mechanical disc brakes. I do notice the snappy feeling when sprinting on a gravel bike especially if you have wide supple tires. I heard Japan don't have public trash bins unless at designated areas like at the convenient stores which is why streets in Japan are very clean because everyone either has to find trash bins or take their trash at home; is that true?
@TwoWheelCruise
@TwoWheelCruise 5 жыл бұрын
I was very close to buying a planet X london road last year.. Looks like a solid commuter bike. Yes, there are rarely any public trash bins in Japan. The only ones will be at convenience stores, but they are fairly absent in convenience stores more downtown in the city.. The lack of them certainly helps people be more conscious about trash that they would need to throw away and there is a strong negative public view towards littering.

Do you think this bike could double as a road bike without giving up much in terms of performance? Do you think you could do a road race or crit with the right tires and get nearly the same performance you would get from a strict road bike?

The frame weight is decent, but you may lose some responsiveness for a crit bike. The roadmachine would be better for that though

I never came across a bike with one in front and twelve speed in back ,sifters on right and left for up and down speeds. Usually three front and like 8 back. fast and takes the gravel roads. Great bike review and video !

The styling of the Unrestricted is not really the style I prefer (too angular), but I take your word for it that it was a good ride. How does the electric shifting get it's power? Is it a button cell battery or does it require something more powerful?

Sram e-tap uses separate detachable batteries on each derailer. This one only uses a rear derailer, and usually the battery should last almost a month

I really like the blue fork accent. Seems like a good everything-bike, but I'm not sure it will take over the niches of "gravel race bike" or "dedicated bikepacking/touring bike". I'd be interested in how it performs with some road slicks. As for the group ride... well, at least Cruise was professional around the model (unlike this comments section).

You'd probably hate the heat here in the Southwest portion of States. Lately, the temps, especially here in Colorado have been in the upper 90s (35-39 C) with afternoon storms (Rain, Thunder, & Hail) several times a week. Of course, as a trade-off, we have some great bike paths and trails located in the state. As bad as the high temps get, I know come August/September, certain states (ie - California) will hit 100+ temperatures, which add in the air pollution and smog will feel absolutely terrible.

When my family and I lived outside of Tokyo many years ago, we lived in temporary government housing which were little houses in and around rice paddies. Back then, the Japanese used a system of what were called bengo ditches and often we would see Japanese people squatting over the ditches along public streets. The ditches carried human waste to collection points and used to fertilize crops. Is this type of system and fertilization still in use?

Hey man, I know you want to capitalize on your new access to bmc stuff, but try not to let your channel turn into the bmc promo channel. No secret bmc sees it as an added bonus in hiring you to have you promo their gear, but just be mindful that if you start spamming bmc stuff, people will think they've sold out. Just be cautious and spread out the bmc content a little

I really like minimal branding (or, ideally, no branding at all). p.s. Thuong's definitely cuter.

frostsmoke I Aldo like the BMCs from the mid 2010s that carried logos on every single tube, lol. It reminds me of an up and coming sportsman who pushes his way onto the scene with his outrageous ego which hasn’t really gotten its first taste of harsh reality. I guess BMC needed to establish their brand and design language before they could start removing the logos. I like understated bikes, that also means lack of logos, but lack of logos and small logos have become common, so they don’t really have the understating effect for me. Looking specifically at the Unrestricted, it looks a bit more utilitarian than what I’m used to from BMC. Big plus in my book, since I appreciate functional design. The paint job isn’t that special in my eyes, but they might have more to choose from. I will not buy it, even if i was looking for a gravel bike and with cash in hand. It is a little bit too fashionable for me atm, the whole “gravel-experience”. There’s a lot of marketing in there and I won’t buy anything before I feel I can discern what is practical and good, and what is pure marketing or selling of an idea. Also, have BMCs model names ever been understated? Lmao. But that’s what I like about them. I can’t take them too seriously, but I fell in love with them from the first gen Timemachine Road. And when you’re in love logic goes out the window.

@@nimaforoughi7266 I think the gravel hype is a positive thing ... about time the roadies realize that it's nicer to ride through nature than between cars. About the bike ... i wouldn't buy it either, but mostly because I love my Rohloff MTB.

frostsmoke Gravel tracks and countryside is very nice for sure. I really need to ride there more often. Much of my riding is concentrated around my commute, so it took me some time to use the side roads more often. Also, your spot on about your mtb. I already have equipment that can sort of fill the gravel demand for me, and that’s one of the reasons I’m a spectator around this gravel hype. And isn’t Rohloff manufacturing a somewhat advanced hub gear? I think i learned about them in a forum discussion about Pinion and Rohloff transmission systems.
@frostsmoke
@frostsmoke 5 жыл бұрын
@@nimaforoughi7266 Yeah, it's a hub gear. Expensive and somewhat on the heavy side but pretty much indestructible and almost maintenance-free. I don't think I'll ever buy a bike with derailleur gears again.
