I have the BMD mini recorder and was going to purchase the sdi to hdmi and hdmi to sdi to enable longer cable legth from the camera. I was thinking of using the bidirectional so i can have both hdmi and sdi outlets at the camera end as I wanted to have a camera monitor and needed hdmi out to run the cheaper monitors. In the end I purchased the Viltrox DC-70EX 4K 7"LCD Camera which has hdmi and sdi 3k inputs and outputs and saved me getting these converters. In AUS dollars the cost of the two BMD converters retails for more than the monitor with the same functionality and a monitor thrown in.

How about if I want to connect my red Komodo and use the FEELWORLD FT6 FR6 5.5 Inch Wireless Video Transmission DSLR Camera Field Monitor Built in Transmitter and Receiver System . Would using one of these converters work and if so which one?

One quick word of warning. While these boxes work great for converting HDMI to SDI and back to HDMI for sending a laptop signal to video monitors, they may not work for projectors. I found this out trying to use them to send an HDMI signal from a MacBook to a Christie LX100 projector. It turns out that the HDMI to SDI converter changes the color space from RGB to YUV and the SDI to HDMI converter does not change it back. Most LCDs are fine with either RGB or YUV inputs, but many older projectors are not. BMD tech support informed me I’d need a different converter to get back to RGB.

I own several BM converters including up down cross. All fine. I bought 3 micro 3G HDMI /SDI - what ever level they are set to is causing compressed image on known good monitors. I downloaded the setup utility and jacked in usb c to unit and usb A to laptop- power on / lights up. But the utility doesn’t see the converter. Can you send a link to the proper utility for hdmi/ sdi 3g micro? Thx

Can this be patched into two BNC fitting CCTV cameras to transmit or convert the signal to a HDMI monitor? I probably should have contacted you prior to ordering this. I wasn't sure if I need the HDMI to SDI converter or the SDI to HDMI one. Feedback appreciated. Thank you.

Hello, Question: My camera has HDMI out only. I'm running it to my switcher through an HDMI to SDI video converter. My switcher has 2 PGM outputs. I try using either one to connect to my PC via a capture card and the video signal is glitching. Is there a reason why and how do i fix? If i connect my camera direct to switcher via HDMI only without the video converter i don't have any issues only if i try using SDI. Why and how do i fix? Your help is much appreciated.

the one SDI to HDMI can be used with a HDMI Usb capture card to be used on OBS Studio? I'll be using a TV Camera for my streamings but this one only have SDI output and I already have a HDMI Capture card on my computer...

Yes that'll work nicely so long as all your frame-rates and resolutions match what the convertor is expecting. 1080p30 would work well.

Hey i have a NTSC TV and the country i moved to has PAL system how do i convert the video. Because when i connect the coaxial cable to the tv, output comes in black n white. When i connect my Ps4 thru Hdmi it comes in color. Is there any way to convert Coaxial to hdmi.

These devices do not go any conversion like that. They only change an HDMI signal to an SDI one (and the other way around)

Hi, my SDI to HDMI has just arrived but I'm having trouble getting my ATEM Pro to recognise it. Basically I work outdoors streaming sport and HDMI is a bit loose, also they aren't ideal for long distances and I go through a lot of them. So I was looking to switch and go SDI from the camera, into the converter and into the ATEM by HDMI. I think i have the correct converter for this? Should I be using a higher standard of SDI cable maybe. I got 30m SDI from Amazon for around £30. Let me know if you have any thoughts, cheers!

I'm starting to think this isn't a function that the converter can perform and that the idea of the switcher is to connect video feeds to monitors etc. I think if I want to use SDI, I need to buy an SDI in mixer. Thoughts?

In this video this guy explains how to use a Ursa EVF with just about any camera. He uses the Atomos recorder to convert HDMI to a specific "SDI-P" signal. Is that what comes out of the units you tested here too?

Hi friend thank you for this video but please help me out. The thing is my brother is cheap lol & doesn’t want to call DISH to install an HDMI cable to my father in laws TV. The thing is my father in laws TV is really fuzzy & there’s really no good clear picture on the TV because it’s using an Antenna cable. Can I use your setup to connect the DISH Antenna to connect an HDMI Cable to connect to my father in laws TV so his TV won’t be fuzzy & he can get that clear picture? Please help.

If we are using the ATEM Television Studio Pro HD and the output for programming is SDI, will the SDI to HDMI work if I have a HDMI Capture card to capture that feed?

Yes that should indeed work. You might need to double check that your capture card can support whatever frame rate and resolution you are outputting, but otherwise it should work!

I really think it depends on the quality of the cables you buy but I believe up to 100m is the limit before needing boasters.

That's correct. An HD-SDI signal can travel up to 340 feet through Belden 1694A, a top-quality coaxial cable. Thinner or lower-quality cables (or multiple connectors/barrels/patches) will attenuate the signal more and limit your range. To extend the signal farther, re-clocking DAs can be used as repeaters.

So, quick, but tough question here. I have an Atomos Sumo and we are shooting a multi-cam green screen course for a tax professional where I would ideally like to have two camera feeds at 1080 23.98 and the third feed has to be his Surface Pro, which is pretty firm on not cooperating with changing the refresh and/or frame rate. If I run the HDMI from this Surface Pro into a converter, is it going to match the frame rate/refresh rate of the input, or praise jesus please work, the output, or will it flat out not work...furthermore, anyone know how I could get this Surface Pro feed transcoded to 1080, 23.98 in the middle man before hitting the Sumo?

It will not. You will need a Blackmagic UpDownCross or a Decimator MDHX to do cross conversions like that

For sure, I’ve run 75m with them but you will want some decent cables if you are getting that long.

This device is for outputting your HDMI signal from the computer. It you connect the HDMI to the converter and then the SDI to another piece of equipment, it should work as expected

Have you got the electrical spectrum of the SDI signal, should be a NRZ spectrum, but there are some peaks in the frequency(2.97GHz) and multiples( 5.94 GHz and 8.91 GHz), is this normal?

Would this work for going from a camera - HDMI mini - to an ATEM mini - HDMI? I need to travel a long distance (60') and my camera is HDMI mini and the ATEM Mini is HDMI. I believe the SDI will allow this long distance. I would do HDMI min to HDMI cable into the converter than SDI most of the distance then converter to HDMI to ATEM mini.

I no prefer SDI as it has become an industry standard and if you go to some random venue somewhere they are most likely to interface with SDI

I need a multi stream setup with 3 hdmi cameras at distances. For that I'm planning to use ATEM mini which has only hdmi inputs. For that I have a plan please check it whether it is feasible. 'From camera hdmi output cable, conversion of hdmi to sdi (for making it feasible for long distance transmission) then since ATEM has only hdmi inputs once again conversion of SDI to HDMI and given to ATEM Mini. Output of ATEM mini is HDMI so atlast I'm planning to use Ultrastudio mini HDMI recorder which gives thunderbolt output to computer. Please check whether this will work.

Ligin Hananiah I don’t believe so. The problem I’m finding from reading is the Ultrastudio recorder. It only operates at 1080i or less, which has given many people problems.

Sorry for the delay. Yes this will work just fine with all the converters. I have done it myself. You could also skip the Ultrastudio and just use the ATEM Minis USB output to bring the signal into the computer.

Hello John, in a context where you are taking a cine camera SDI output to an HDMI monitor, would you privilege a long SDI cable to the converter box and then a shorter HDMI cable to the monitor? Or a Short SDI cable to the box and then a longer HDMI cable to the monitor? I am not sure which is the greatest enemy to a clean signal with no latency. Thanks! -Charles

Having purchased three of these for a shoot, all three of them failed miserably when it came to audio. The audio was choppy and full of static on all three, though sometimes this was delayed.

Hi, I have bought yesterday this HDMI to SDI converter . After connecting the cables and turning the converter power on , I made a channel scan on the TV to find the frequency of the converter but the scan result was"no channel found" . So i have got no image on my screen Even though the computer can read it and it detect a secondary screen connected. do you have any idea how to solve this problem?

I’m not sure what you mean by “channel scan”. These are converters for hdmi to sdi conversion so your tv need to be plugged in via hdmi or sdi (but I’m presuming that you don’t have sdi on your tv)

I see - unfortunately the HDMI to SDI converter is not a computer interface and it will not work the way you might think. It merely converts hdmi to sdi. You will need a usb or Thunderbolt interface to bring it into the computer. Like a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder or Intensity Shuttle.

You cannot connect directly unless it is a webcam. We recommend buying a Magewell USB capture device

You can indeed. Provided the projector supports the resolution that your camera is outputting. Otherwise that should work!

Thank you for your test! I bought a Chinese clone that works perfectly but introduces a delay of about 10 frames, and when I use my gopro connected to a atem mixer and recording musical battery is not that great. So I was thinking of taking this original.

I’m pretty sure you cannot do this. While BNC is the connection type, the SDI protocol is not necessarily what your old tv is expecting.
