EightCounts even though I'm a Reds fan, I do Miss Those Days too. Maddux-Smoltz-Glavin and watching Dave Justice, Chipper Jones, Mcgriff, Javy Lopez, etc etc... just really miss 80's and 90's baseball. I remember Maddux would have a 15 or 20 to 1 SO to walk ratio and made it seem routine.

One of the greatest stats I ever heard on Maddux was his record on the road during his last 2 seasons of his 4 consecutive Cy Young award years. In 1994, he was 10-2 with a 1.37 ERA on the road, and in 1995, he was 13-0 with a 1.12 ERA on the road. So for 2 seasons, he was 23-2 on the road with an ERA around 1.25. That is absolutely gaudy! His season W-L & ERA's were 16-6 1.56 in 1994(strike shortened season), and 19-2 1.63 in 1995. Sick!

Maddux was amazing in that he never revealed to the press how truly brilliant he was. He perfected saying enough without actually saying anything. Perhaps as he gets further and further away from his playing days he will open up more and discuss his pitching philosophy and strategy.

I see that old footage of a Braves uniform with "MADDUX" across the back, and I suddenly become extremely nostalgic for the 90s. Watching Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz each night in tye summer, and Michael Jordan each night in the winter.

Greg Maddux is the reason I watch baseball. I was never a huge fan of the game growing up, but seeing Greg pitch was special even to a non baseball fan, and thanks to him I started following the braves. Now he still remains the measuring stick by which I judge every great pitcher, and I'm sure that will be the case for a long, long time to come.

It bothers me so much when you read about a prospect coming up and people say "His ceiling is limited, because he doesn't have 'Ace Stuff'". Greg Maddux didnt have 'ace stuff' either, and he's a top 5 pitcher of all time at the very least

You're confusing velocity with stuff. Maddux certainly had ace stuff. His sinker was a plus and his change was plus-plus. He also touched mid 90s with his 4 seamer when he came up.

He would beat hitters by making good pitches. Even he has always said that, and says that right here in this interview. It seems like outsmarting if you just MAKE GOOD PITCHES. He was the best in the world at location, movement, and change of speed. Only movement is debatable, but I say you got to give it to him, because he could move it any direction, and with uncanny consistency, which is different than just having the biggest curve or the bitingest slider.

@@chadmichael03 Maddux reduced his velocity in order to get more movement on his sinker then intentionally rebuilt his entire arsenal to look just like that pitch until the ball was halfway to the plate. By that time, it was too late to adjust and they miss it or make weak contact. While Maddux had great command, his success was all about deception and he wasn't about to give the hitters any insight into what he was doing to them in an interview while he was still playing. After he retired, he talked a lot more candidly about how he approached the craft. He knew exactly what he was doing to hitters and it was NOT as simple as "make good pitches".

Greg Maddux was the essential professional pitcher who showed he could win consistently without really throwing hard. He's a sure bet HOF in 5yrs and it may be awhile before we see another pitcher like Greg Maddux. All young pitchers should watch and see how Greg pitched so consistently for so long.

Growing up in Northern Canada not many people gave a s%$@ about baseball. This is the guy that got me into it and to go as far as renting movies and books on pitching. I wouldn't have pitched and had as much fun as I did if it wasn't for Greg.

Greg Maddux was always my favorite player even to this day. I was broken when he called for retirement. All my buds said that Clemens and Randy Johnson was the best, of course Power Pitchers. Maddux can make a 300. hitter look like one who meets the Mendoza line. He is the greatest Pitcher in the live ball era. I have him on my all time roster for greatest players.

Greg Maddux was the smartest baseball player I ever saw. When he was pitching, I wouldn't follow the ball after he threw it, I would watch him and see how he reacted to the play. He never made a wrong move.

@IWantDaveKast WRONG! He beat the Yankees in game 2 of the '96 World Series 4-0 pitching 8 innings allowing 0 runs, 6 hits, and 0 walks. His other 2 starts against NY in the World Series were game 6 of '96 when he pitched 7 2/3 allowing 3 earned runs in a tough 3-2 loss. And in '99, he pitched 7 innings allowing 2 earned runs in a 4-1 loss. Altogether he pitched 22 2/3 innings & allowed 5 earned runs for a 1.99 ERA vs NY. Hardly his fault with no run support. It's time to retract your comment.

@TheWindLancer If you look at the Braves lineup while they were pitching, the only ''powerhouse'' guy was Chipper. The Phillies had and (still have) Rhino, Utley, Chooch, had Raul So Cool and they have added both Youngs. Plus, the Phil's now have a deeper bullpen with Paps, Adams, Horst, Bastardo and Aumont, therefore resulting in better run support, run protection and just overall more wins.

Listening to these people talking about his pitching record like it's the best indication of his performance. So ridiculous. Even his pitching coach (3:07) "He didn't know what it took to pitch in the big leagues. I think he was like 6-14 in his first year.... [Then over the winter he worked on his pitches] and the next year he was like 18-8." It sounds so crazy now, but that's how everyone, even pitching coaches, used to evaluate pitchers.
