I love and appreciate your detailed and thoughtful interpretation of this beautiful book. I would just kindly and respectfully point out the central thought that there is a universal law that not only units all religions, but also all sciences like mathematics and music, as nature and the esthetic of nature. One global law of the inner and outer existence

My husband is listening to Audible Glass Bead Game reminded me of reading it in mid 80's - very catalytic. Seems it's time to read again, so ordered the same edition from Thrift Books! Plan to "journal" the reading. Love the commentaries by Ron Dart.

“Smiling benignly at those who take it too seriously.” Indeed. Thanks so much for this overview. I was looking for some insight into the trend of youtubers saying they are playing “the glass bead game” and yet don’t seem to have read the book or if they did they didn’t get the irony. Many thanks and happy trails.

The glass bead game book is all those things you identify. If I had to put the enduring lesson in one sentence it would be this... Life is no joke, and we must take it seriously, but at the same time we must never take our own selves too seriously. An act of will be it a singular episode or stretched over a lifetime, is socially and historically contingent. Every action no matter how mundane and insignificant it may seem, reverberates backwards and forwards in history, each moment profound. I wonder if the last event in the glass bead game taking place in the water, if the author had in mind "oceanic feeling"

I didn't catch the name of the seminal modern Roman Catholic thinker the speaker mentioned in connection with inter-faith dialogue and ecological awareness just after the discussion of Karl Jaspers - sounded like " Yvert Couzens" - can anyone enlighten me? Pax et bonum Alistair Munro Nelson NZ

One would hope that the game were something similar to 'The Raft' in "Snow Crash", by Neil Stephenson. It's the future of the internet - the manifestation of collective unconsciousness. I wonder what would happen in a world without death - Soon, we'd start killing each other, invent death - life insurance, funeral policies, 'legal wills' and all the reparent aspects of capitalism and materialism. It's a fungus. Legal Wills, funeral plans and life insurance. Dear me...

Hesse lacked the foresight to give an easy- pronouncable name to his lead character. Or did he intend to "knecht" (verb "knechten") future generations of scholars handling the "CH" in german language? I think this is the main question we have to discuss after the recent fall of Kastalien! (smily)

Empiricism is far from objectove imformation. Reason, expressed as mathematics has always been the objective coding that conveys Qualia. But qualia itself isnt objective like the mathematics, it is subjective. Code and Content. Empiricists have faith in their fallible human senses. But reason, mathematics, is timeless, and utilizing the psr and occam's razor will bring you to eternal necessary truths.
