I believe it’s to protect the fish from getting slammed against the sides of the live well in the giant waves

Yep, it adds another layer of protection in rough rides for the fish so that when the boat drops off the backside of a wave the fish don’t slam against the top of the lids.

Have you used any of the forward facing sonar yet? I can see your points, but there is still an incredible amount of skill to it and based on my lack of fish catches versus the amount of bass I saw shows that it doesn't put them in the boat for you.
