Bmw 2015 420 convertible f33 fills with water when it rains

I have the same car, BMW didn't seem to have a clue, my local mechanic took the drain plug out and made the hole a little bigger so the water just runs straight through. Seems ridiculous that this has t be done, it's not a cheap car after all!

On older cars, that seal is only decorative. To find out why water is going in through there, you'd have to remove that double-sided-tape stuck on piece and find the hole. That piece will run you a £100. My guess is water is going in through the C-pillar base. The problem isn't so much that the water is going in, rather the drain at the bottom of the car is blocked.

I have EXACTLY the same issue with the window seal. Mine is about to go back to BMW as the inside of the car is like a paddling pool. I've only had it 3 months and been away for 2.5 of those! Oh and the fault of water being retained in the door panels is a 'known issue and repair' from BMW. I had mine done before I took delivery of it. Same 2015 420d.

Hi there. Great vid. Thanks for posting. Exactly the same problems here. I think the water is meant to be able to drain out, and the issue is blocked holes and poor design. Grateful to know how you got on. This will be last beemer I own.

They replaced the window seal but the car was still under warranty

It’s not the seal it’s the drain plugs are clogging. It’s designed to have the water run through the seals and out the bottom drain. I have a 2018 F33 the drains got clogged. Damaged my rear window motor. It was a mess. Crap design without a recall. Bad job by BMW.

Also had same issue on 14 plate F33. Job can be done at home, both sides done in half hour. ‘Luckily’ being a BMW anything you take off clips back on! Remove kick plate. Remove 10 tree/push clips clips under the side skirt and pull said off. Drain plug either side unscrews, leave this out. Replace all in reverse order leaving plugs out.

I was thinking to leave the drain plugs out but will that not cause issues in the future with crap getting into it over time and building up and blocking it again?

@@Gareth.kellyy it’s not so much the plugs are the problem it’s the side skirt if fitted doesn’t allow water to run freely. With plugs out the side skirt will stop anything getting in but allow water out.

@@johnt5842 hi John thank you for your reply I haven’t added add on side skirts to the car but I’ve had the amp blown twice due to water damage. I removed the drain plugs underneath the car and drained the water out and cut the plastic under cover to alow easy flow for the water. Do you suggest then do leave the drain plugs out or any other suggestions

@@Gareth.kellyy yes, the M sports have the side skirts. Plugs are inserted stop bugs getting inside car ie spiders don’t think we have to much problem in UK LOL FOR HOT countries

The problem is even with the drainage of water sorted, what level of rust protection is there inside that area? You might find these rust significantly in the future unless there is a lot of protection. You only a tiny area not rust proofed and once the water gets in it'll carry on rusting until it all rots out. So don't drill any additional drain holes in to the metal.

Did you ever got this problem solved? The seal costs around 220 dollars and not the easiest to replace.

Seals will always harden and leak over time. I hear the BMW fix is to drill a 10mm hole underneath through a piece of plastic which blocks the drain, but this is the part I want to see explained. I can drill the hole, just need to know where.

@@Gareth.kellyy I did the fix ages ago, there's tons of info on BMW forums. You have to remove a few screws, just enough to be able to pull sill and undertray down enough so you can see where the drain plug is (on both sides), then drill holes through the plastic sill and undertray so the water from the drain plug can flow out.

I got another issue but wondered if you would have had an idea or recommendation? The window regulator is off but the roof doesn't go down to fix it, is there a way to take off the roof manually?

Thanks for the vid. Same issue but I also found the compartment where the amplifier logic 7 (very expensive to replace at around £1600!!) Was submergerged in a deep puddle and is now offline!! Proper piss take really! BMW should take responsibility and compensate/replace part free of charge even if warranty has expired. In shorta Very bad design 😠 Just to add I searched like mad but couldn't find any drain holes in the compartment that houses the amp

Hey man what do you think the solution is? I just changed my amp due to water damage. I’ve drained out the water via the drain plug and made a hole in the plastic cover. Other than that is there anything to do to Protect the amp?

I have the same problem passenger rear bmw know about the the problem and haven't done anything to resolve it . It blow-up amplifier to replace it cost £1500 bmw they take your money but don't tell you how shit the seals are its better they remove the drain plug better than rusting your car to bits then if some one was to hit you your car will drop 2 bits

I’ve taken the drain plugs out and now the water comes out the bottom of the car but water is still getting in the car with puddle under the seat. Any idea how to solve this please?

18’ BMW 435i convertible same issue it killed my motor in the rear window. $1K replacement and once again a year later the water is back and sloshing around. Effen joke this is for a $70k car. They take NO responsibility and just keep wanting me to get her serviced again.
