I am a BMW tech since 5 years and i think it is important to point out that all of these issues are very rare. N-engines are getting old now so i dont see them so often. Nut the b series engines are very solid. Out of these problems, on B48 i have replaced like 3-4 coolantpipes which go below the intakemanifold like 2 years ago so it seem to be resolved. Replaced the vanos units on 1Fwd B38. Very rare on the rwd version. I have a b38 myself and im happy with it.

The water pump on the b series can either link on the pump itself or the bracket/carrier it is mounted on (gaskets that mount to the engine block). Which happens more often based on your research?

The n26 is infinitely superior to the N20 because its backed by a 15 year 150000 mile warranty. I bought my 328i when she was 6 years old. Shes 11 now and her timing chain guide blew which inturn chalked the entire engine. Cam lobes.. cylinder heads... block was shredding itself. BMW gave me a refurbed N26 and turbocharger as that was chalked too. Still covered for 4 years / 51000 miles.

I have questions. My B48 engine sometimes on idle , i feel some vibrations but di rpm is stable not fluctuating. The vibrations usually happen when the engine cold and the rpm already down to around 750. Do you think is because faulty fuel tank vent? Thank you

I am working on it that engine has very good power and fuel consumption, but I would not call it reliable neither the best diesel engines ever made lol

yes, the older M series diesel engines M57, M47 are great-these are in the e60, but the newer N series engines in the f30 not so much

For fun it's the BMW without a doubt, the M57 is also a fantastic engine. The A6 is more comfortable but very boring, personally I'd pick the E90 every single time without a doubt.

Reliability is faaaar away from them , parts are super expensive , and I really don't care about the interior plastics being different to main stream cars!

I've not had a single fault on my F20 with an N13 in 1.5 years of ownership so far, it's great to drive, doesn't use a lot of fuel and is currently running 220hp thanks to a remap so it's actually quite quick, the N13 is not a bad engine so it being the worst on the list means it's a list of pretty good engines.
