Look at all those spindley timing chains, plastic chain guides, soft tensioners, vanos units,injectors and coils.... I'll never be out of a job fixing them 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

255k kilometers with my bmw e46 n46b18, timing chain and valve stem seals changed,very good reliable engine

I work in a shop that services BMW's. I've owned four of them, and will soon be buying my fifth. Two of my co-workers have one. However, if there's one thing we've all learned, is to stay away from the four cylinder engines. The problems start with the timing chain guides, and end up with a catastrophic engine failure. This looks almost as if it's programmed to occur just after the 100,000 kilometer mark.

Looks like N46B20 or N42B20 I have N46B20 I went throught many oil leaks and one vanos problem but fixed it. This time is in queue Valve stem seals... if I know how many problems will occure I would bought M54B22 or higher...

n42b18 here. I'm adding 0.5l of oil every 1000km. Engine mileage is 100,000km. Sigh...

BMW N42/N46 need Replace every 100000 km Valve Stem Seals and chane. so You will not have an oil expense. and eny problem. its very good engine. need longlife oil too.

LOL, the whole point of a timing chain is that it should never need to be serviced. Honda chains outlast the rest of the car.

If it's smoking when accelerating after leaving engine to idle for 5-10min then valve stem seals, very common

n20 is indented to change 6cyl, of course it is better. n13 nowadays replaced old 4cyl
