I bought one of the last 530d’s. It’s a keeper for me. With 50mpg average (750 range) and as fast as you want I can’t see why anyone would want an EV.

I love the new 5 series, I have the outgoing 520d , I would happily buy the petrol 520i as I don’t do big mileage but the price of the car ( E class included) have become out of reach . As for the i5 , that’s another level of ridiculous. The electric bubble is getting ready to burst . There was a high surge of early adapters to electric but just go to Carzone and look at the amount of 2 year old electric cars and suvs for sale already. Those VW ID 4 suv s that were over €50 grand ., you can have your pick of Two and a half year old ones for €25 grand . The same goes for the ionic 5 . The Kia EV 6 is holding on a bit better . The cars are fine I’m not pining for petrol or diesel, but our government s handling of our infrastructure to meet electricity demand has been utterly shameful

those cars you mentioned were way way overpriced especially when compared to the Tesla M3...as the tesla got cheaper due to efficiencies in their production cycle it made those prices look even more farcical. Anyone that bought those cars at those prices is a complete moron and never even looked at alternatives. They were always going to massively drop in price to compete with Tesla...anyone with half a brain could see that..except for those muppets who bought a 40k car for 60k. BMW are going the exact same way...way way overpriced.

If you haven't already seen it, I'd recommend watching Harry's Garage as to why after running EV's Harry is struggling with battery efficiency data and moving out of his EV's. It should be compulsory viewing for anyone thinking of buying any EV.

Saw the G60 prices and bought a fully loaded G31 530e Touring instead. The interior trim quality is a massive step back from the G30/31

80k is big money and likely that is what you will pay with a few extras. I'd be expecting some good performance for that price, it has 205 bhp. It will be interesting to see how many they sell compared to previous generations, something tells me a dramatic drop!

I currently drive the previous 520i model but in the SE version, I have had a test drive in the new model and like it a lot. The only thing that has stopped me buying one is that it’s only available in the M sport variant. Frustratingly, you can get the SE equivalent variation on the continent, and I have spacked up the model I would like on the German BMW website. But not available in right hand drive.my local dealer tells me the SE may be available eventually, but that is no help now, when I’m in the market to buy a new car Great car, but you buy one of these for luxury and comfort, not just for being a firm sporty drive.

Can you get an M Sport with the suspension for M removed? You certainly could in the F10.

It’s illogical not to continue with diesel for high mileage drivers. They are better cars if you are doing big miles and I prefer to characteristics. Huge torque makes driving very relaxing. The environmental lobby wield too much influence and are causing us to make daft decisions. I’ll buy electric when they are as good as petrol and diesel and not before. At the moment they are a long way from that…….but you can’t say that or you get hate mail from greens everywhere. No opinions permitted in this life anymore.

Mark, I think there’s something up with the sound at 1:30 - it sounds like you said that it’s EIFHTY THREE THOUSAND EURO! I bought one of those 2008 520d SE’s for €46k, with the infamous €156 tax. This is nonsense - they’ll all be company car allowance buyers and no private buyers, meaning private buyers in the 2nd hand market won’t touch it unless it’s heavily depreciated. Ditto for all new cars where the price anchoring makes no sense

Beautiful car but I will never own one. I wish however I was brave enough to buy a well looked after 520d F10 with not too high a mileage. Plenty of them about for the price of a new Dacia Sandero. Would you consider doing the occasional review of good value used buys in the luxury end of things?

Very interesting stats on new car registrations on the SIMI motor stats site. 42% less BMW 5 Series (saloons) registered overall in Jan 2024 vs. Jan 2023. 52 new petrol (520i) registrations in 2024 vs. 1 in 2023 (a 5,100% increase!), 50 petrol plug-in hybrids registered in Jan 2024 vs. 33 in Jan 2023 (51.5% increase) and zero diesel registrations in Jan 2024 vs. 160 diesels registered in Jan 2023. This tells a tale especially the uptake in petrol and the previous level of demand for diesels in Ireland. Also, no apparent 5 Series full EV registrations listed for Jan 2024.

Well there’s not going to be any 2024 diesels if they don’t sell them. A lot of 530e models have not been delivered / registered due to a parts issue. The 2023 520i is the press car that’s in this video I’d imagine. I think Jan/March will tell a more robust picture.

I knew alright that there was no diesel option in the new 5 and hence the zero registrations in Jan 2024. Still interesting to see the number of diesels registered in the previous Jan, more diesels than any other variant in fact. 52 petrol in 2024 vs 1 in 2023 is also telling, again likely reflecting the lack of a diesel option. Will be interesting alright to see what February and March stats look like in time 👍

I was lucky enough to be driven around in an '89 E34 520i (dolphin grey) for many of my teenage years. Not too many on the road back then unlike today. Beautiful car, would have been better with the 3.5! The 535i Sport was £45k in 1989..…..

All that money and folding door mirrors an extra!! I doubt t it has heated steering wheel either. How do other manufacturers manage to put so much kit on their cars - Kia, Skoda, Renault etc - for so much less. Yes I know it’s a brand thing but don’t charge that much and then expect another 15,000 euros just to get stuff you actually want. I blame the weak German economy. These great companies, Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen are having a difficult time so the answer is always to push prices up. I do wonder what their sales figures are like. Surely they can’t all be leased as company cars. Like you Mark, don’t understand why they decided not to sell Diesel versions in UK and Ireland as pretty sure they are selling in Euroland…….

8.1L/100km is pretty heavy fuel consumption these days with petrol around €1.80/l. No surprise with that and staggering price that sales are poor and high mileage drivers who would prefer diesel are put off. Also the car looks excessively large in the flesh- over 5m long!

Good review nobby. The car is nice and having seen one in the flesh think the proportions are nice though was a big fan of the previous model. Agree about the diesel dont understand why they dont sell it. Do you think the infotainment system is overly complicated. 🤔

Yeah there’s a lot involved menu wise. You don’t regularly use 90% of it but it’s still a lot going on.

Ahh, good old BMW, makes you spend over 80.000,00 € on their car, still won't let you have the auto-folding mirrors. Comfort access? Adaptive suspension? Kick to open boot? 360 camera? Heated steering wheel? Ventilated front seats? By the way, all of the mentioned functions are a standard on a KIA. Thanks for a nice summary.

Comfort, camera and heated wheel alright. If there’s a setting to sort the mirrors automatically, it’s buried in the doors and windows sub menu but I tried finding it.

Just bought a 330e for 21k with 82k on the clock. Does 600 kilometres on a full tank and a couple of charges..the tank is only 9 gallons. I know which bmw I'd buy.

Great review thanks Mark. Quick question you say the g60 520i doesn’t have auto folding mirrors are you sure? My wife’s 2019 3 series has them - I’d be shocked and appalled if that was missing ?

I dont think that's right - on the drivers side there's a button to fold in the mirrors - this seems standard in the base 520i instruction manual and what you'd expect as standard. Maybe on your review car the setting in the idrive was switched off - to not fold them in automatically? I'm only making the point as ill probably buy the 520i in January and this feature would be a deal breaker for me!! I can check when i test drive the car but id be 99% certain it's standard. @@NobbyOnCars

Don’t think so….i believe it’s petrol or hybrid or electric. No oil burners. Pity. As an ex 530d G30 driver I’d buy this one in that guise straight away but alas can’t be got in RHD anyway. Gorgeous looking but as with the i5 M60 they are silly money now. Sales seemed very poor for Jan for a new shape 5 series in all varieties (SIMI stats). Strange??

The price is ridiculous! just can’t see BMW selling many of these at these prices? What I can’t understand though, is that BMW are still making the 2 litre Diesel in RHD and of which are readily available in other countries. Both Mercedes and Audi are still selling the diesel engines in the Uk but sadly BMW have lost the plot. Why on earth would you stop selling your biggest seller and market leading engine on the new 5 series? ……..

Ask yourself the question - what price will someone pay in 5 years time for a depleted battery / depleted range - and that’s depleted from todays number - never mind the range they will selling in 5 5years time - and how much will you pay for a 5 series diesel or petrol in 5 years time - has the penny dropped - the EV will drop like a stone - the extra 50k plus some will be wiped out in depreciation - there is NO PROVEN second hand EV car market …..and before the environment evangelists start shouting - keep in mind that in Ireland 70% of electricity is generated using fossil fuels - so you ya 50k more for electric and just pushed the fossil fuels source further up the chain but its nonsense at the moment. Just wait and see the EV market values collapse.

Carplay sounds a bit rubbish. Which iPhone do you have? I think they maybe saving diesel for touring so they don’t have to put so many models through type approval. I think that is why they have option packs rather than individual etc and Kia etc have trim 123 with no extra options

Nobby......are you mad?? The BMW. 2.0 d engine in any range guise is a terrible engine. it was so troublesome, oil consumption, carbon deposits clogging every orifice, timing chains made from rubber. Sorry man, in my experience and knowing what I know of them, I would give no consideration to diesel.
