I had these sensors on a E39 525i. They were part of the alarm system, to trigger the alarm if the car is lifted (to steal a wheel or even the whole car).

Thank you for this info . Your Root cause investigation reveals how an inexpensive & environmentally compromised plastic height sensor part can open the door to THOUSANDS in unnecessary service charges - if one’s chassis error is being serviced by an incompetent or dishonest service manager or mechanic. These vehicles are LACED with ELECTRONICALLY NETWORKED components throughout its CHASSIS …when there is a FAULT (separation or break in the networked connection of these intricately connected components throughout the vehicle) a “chassis” related error message is the notification that an electronic component is NOT in normal circuit connection or “fused/joined to” the vehicles networked circuit cycle/system. The vehicle component malfunction or odd operational behavior is the manifestation of the electrically networked component FAULT or functional SEPARATION from the vehicle’s “computer” network which is strategically wedded throughout the chassis/frame of the vehicle. Bottom line, burnt out relays and/or fuses can ALSO correlate to the operational failure of a “mechanical/moving” part that is out of phase or participation within the vehicle’s “networked circuit or nervous system”. Watching this video along with a host of other videos has helped me to understand and appreciate the value and high engineering that has gone into the development and manufacturing of these vehicles. Sharing & having INFORMATION & UNDERSTANDING can MAKE and SAVE One $$$$$❤

Question, would this bad sensor drain the battery over night? I just replaced my alternator, battery and IBS because it kept telling me my battery was discharging while sitting there. As soon as I got the new battery this chassis warning appeared and it’s still discharging.

Maybe you just added an accessory on you car recently, that could be the source of battery discharging, Scan the car and look for fault code. if in doubt about the sensor, just un plug it and plug it back after 1 minute, maybe it will help. I have the same issue on a 2018 m240i xdrive but it occurred after installing h&r sport springs. Took it to the dealer and they said it was because of the lowering springs and everything is all good to drive but the warning light is still on and bothers me. Could this fix it?

Probably they were shot, Check out this video if your sensor have the same problem (kzbin.info/www/bejne/apekapWBhthpq68), Also check your adaptive shock absorber connectors, Sometimes they can become loose and activate that message.

just finished this lubrication on drivers side front and drivers side rear. Do these sensors also exist on passenger side?

My love of he brand is quickly diminishing. I live where there are no good indy shops. Looks like dropping the intercooler, charge pipe, moving water pump to side, allow a fairly straight shot at the 3 bolts. A really poor design... There is a KZbin commenter who did it this way saying it was "not too bad" Need someone with more skills and ability than I have... @@edcardiy

The way I see it is I think it's better to disconnect the water pump completely and remove it out of the way and re-install it back after the diverter valve have been replaced.

lubricate the ball joints on sensors and also check your adaptive shock absorber connectors, maybe they came loose.
